Welcome to the Technical Drawing 2 Self-Learning Module 3 on Lettering Styles!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge Schools Division
Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with the Local
Government of Pasig through its Mayor, Honorable Vico Sotto.
The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into

LESSON

Styles of Letters

1. Gothic Letters- these letters are the simplest and readable letters among the
four style. It has elementary strokes of even width. Gothic letter is more easily
made, and in single-stroke form. It is usually applied in technical drawing and
also used in billboard, advertisement and commercial purposes.
2. Roman Letters- letters having elementary strokes “accented” or consisting
of thick and thin elements. In the Roman letter,
(a) the heavy or thick element is called stem or body mark;
(b) the light or thin element is the hair line;
(c) the cross stroke which finishes all free ends is the serifs; and
(d) the curves connecting the serifs and stem is called the brackets
and fillets.

3. Text or Old English Letters- it is the most artistic among the four styles of
letters. This letters are preferred for certificates, diplomas, citations,
greetings and invitation cards. Also known as Old English, German Text,
Bradley Text or other forms of various trade names.
4. Italic Letters- all letters slightly slanted at the right are classified as Italic
letters. It can be Roman Italic or Gothic Italic.
