Three Kingdoms 7: The Battle of Red Cliffs (Part

Two)
Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu gradually advance, forcing Cao Cao's troops, who are not adept at naval warfare, to retreat. How will the
Battle of Red Cliffs end? Can Cao Cao find a way out of his predicament?
The Battle of Red Cliffs is one of the most famous battles in ancient China and has been made into several movies and TV series. It
also features stories that have become well-known idioms in the Chinese language.
This story is adapted from a part of the novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”, one of the four great classic novels in Chinese
literature, and is based on a vocabulary of 1,000 words.

Chapter 1: Bold Idea

Cao Cao led a large army to attack Jiangdong. A major battle was about to begin.
One night, Cao Cao received a letter from Old General Huang Gai of Jiangdong.
Huang Gai said he was going to bring his troops and his supplies to surrender to Cao Cao.
Although this was great news, Cao Cao still didn’t quite dare to believe it. Was Huang Gai really surrendering?
Cao Cao decided to send someone to Jiangdong.
He wanted to send this person to go to Zhou Yu’s side to see if Huang Gai was really surrendering.
Because Jiang Gan and Zhou Yu were old classmates, and Jiang Gan had been to Jiangdong before, Jiang Gan said he wanted to go.
Cao Cao agreed.
This was Jiang Gan’s second visit to Zhou Yu’s house.
Unexpectedly, as soon as he arrived at the door, he was led into the mountains by Zhou Yu’s soldiers.
He stayed in the mountains for a week. One snowy night, he found an opportunity to escape from the mountains.
He ran for a long time, and when he was at his coldest and most tired moment, he saw a warm thatched cottage.
The owner of the thatched cottage was “Mr. Fledgling Phoenix” Pang Tong.
Jiang Gan thought of that famous saying:
“Crouching Dragon and Fledgling Phoenix, whoever obtains one of the two can bring peace to the world.”
A bold idea instantly came to his mind.
He asked Pang Tong, “Mr. Fledgling Phoenix, why do you live alone in these mountains?”
Pang Tong said, “I want to find a good job in Jiangdong, but Zhou Yu doesn’t like me and won’t give me a job.
I have nowhere to go, so I have no choice but to live in these mountains.”
Jiang Gan was extremely surprised: “You’re so smart. Everyone wants to know you. Why doesn’t Zhou Yu like you?”
Pang Tong said, “Zhou Yu said I’m not good-looking, so he doesn’t like me.”
“Eh? How could Zhou Yu say that about you? That’s really infuriating!” Jiang Gan said.
Pang Tong asked with a smile, “Who are you? Where are you from?”
“My name is Jiang Gan. I come from north of the river,” Jiang Gan said.
Pang Tong said, “There’s a war coming. Jiangdong is not safe. You better go back quickly.”
Jiang Gan nodded and asked, “Mr. Fledgling Phoenix, you’ve read many books. Who do you think are the great heroes of today?”
Pang Tong smiled and said, “Your question has been answered a long time ago.
More than ten years ago, Cao Cao invited Liu Bei to drink wine in his courtyard.
At that time, Cao Cao said that there were only two heroes in the world, himself and Liu Bei.”
“Do you think Cao Cao and Liu Bei are heroes?
Now that ‘Crouching Dragon’ Zhuge Liang is already working for Liu Bei. Are you willing to work for Cao Cao?”
Jiang Gan said his bold idea out loud.
Pang Tong laughed loudly and asked, “Would Cao Cao also say I’m not good-looking?”
Jiang Gan said, “Of course not! I am Lord Cao’s assistant.
He particularly admires smart people and has long wished to meet you, Mr. Fledgling Phoenix.
Would you be willing to come with me to meet Lord Cao right now?”
Pang Tong thought about it, then said, “Alright, I’ll go with you to see him.”
