Half the Sky

Chinese women are given half a day off work on March 8 to mark International Women’s Day.

Half the Sky

Everyone has their own opinion about the differences between men and women, and this is also the case in China.
Like many countries in the world, China has a history of gender inequality.
For a long time in Chinese history, women could not go to school to study and also could not work outside the home, ..
.. but had to stay home to look after their children and care for their families.
Change has occurred in the last few hundred years. In 1844, China had its first school for girls.
Women began to try to get out of the house and go to school and work just like men.
In 1949, after the founding of the PRC, the idea that “women hold up half the sky” was put forward, ..
.. and women were given a half-day holiday on March 8.
Nowadays, in China, most women go to school and also choose to go out to work.
So, for many women, Women’s Day is a day that makes people happy.
On this day, they leave the office in the afternoon to chat and eat with their friends.
When they return home, most husbands and children also give them small gifts to say “thank you”.
