CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter contains the global perspective and national perspective

about this study, introduction of the study, theoretical framework, project

objectives, the significance of the study, scope and delimitation of the study, and

the definition of terms.

Global Perspective

The use of sublime text by ICT students improves their global computer

literacy skills. This adaptable text editor is used by numerous educational

institutions on numerous continents, making it available to students from various

countries. Due to Sublime Text's extensive language support, users of all

linguistic backgrounds can use it productively regardless of the programming

languages they learn. According to Manninder S., Sublime Text is a versatile

text editor with a sleek interface, supports multiple programming languages, and

offers powerful features like code highlighting and auto-completion.

Due to the promotion and discussion of Sublime Text in online

programming forums that bring together aspiring programmers from all over the
RIZAL HIGH SCHOOL
Information and Communication Technology PAGE 2
world, its influence extends beyond academic settings. The ability to use

Sublime Text proficiently can significantly increase job prospects for ICT

students around the world, providing access to positions in tech-related

industries abroad.

As technology advances, Sublime Text continues to advance the

computer literacy skills of ICT students around the world. Due to its prominence

in the software development industry, Sublime Text is still a widely used tool,

despite regional preferences and competitors.

In 2001, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) assembled a global panel

to examine the relationship between ICT and literacy. The panel, comprising

experts from education, politics, NGOs, labor, and business, met five times in

2017, with two sessions outside the US to preserve global perspectives.

The panel discussed the need for an ICT literacy indicator globally and

within institutions like corporations and schools, based on the National

Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and the International Adult

Literacy Survey (IALS). They also aimed to create a practical framework for

ICT literacy.

National Perspective
RIZAL HIGH SCHOOL
Information and Communication Technology PAGE 3
"We think that education is essential to accomplishing the nation's goals

for digital transformation as the need for digital skills rises. Before students

enter the workforce, educational institutions must be able to provide them with

the necessary information and digital skills". According to Rudy Abrahams,

managing director of SAP Philippines, it would not only increase their

professional chances but also enable them to support public or private

businesses in innovating for commercial success.

Through its University Alliances Program (UAP) in the nation, SAP SE

(NYSE: SAP) continues its mission to help the world run better and improve

people's lives by assisting in bridging the gap and developing the next

generation's digital skills for more opportunities in the professional world.

This effort, which has more than 160 university participants from around

Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ), intends to help academic staff develop students'

digital abilities by integrating the most recent tools and techniques with SAP

solutions. Access to SAP software is provided to participants in this program.

Additionally, it hopes to motivate partners to collaborate with the SAP

ecosystem of clients and partners by teaching them best practices for

incorporating program materials into instruction.

Introduction
RIZAL HIGH SCHOOL
Information and Communication Technology PAGE 4
Computer literacy is now crucial to all societal activities and areas of

daily life. Computer literacy is an essential requirement for success in school,

employment, and daily life, according to (MathGenie, 2018). Understanding

sublime text's use is crucial for improving grade 11 ICT students' computer

literacy. In order to properly utilize computers and related technologies, one

must possess knowledge and abilities that range from simple computer operation

to advanced computer programming. This is referred to as computer literacy. It

helps to use Sublime Text. Students who are unfamiliar with Sublime Text's

functionality might have an issue with this statement.

A student wouldn't be able to improve their literacy skills as they desired

without the necessary knowledge of how to use sublime text and without

knowing where to begin (Kinder, K 2013). Sublime Text is a proprietary, cross-

platform text editor designed for people who spend a lot of time moving code

around. Consequently, to improve ICT students' computer literacy abilities and

better understand how to further comprehend exquisite text.

Furthermore, as a requirement for ICT students, it is crucial to be able to

improve our computer literacy abilities. We first need to become familiar with

using sublime text in order to be more fluent in computer literacy skills. As

people learn how to operate in sublime text, they have a much wider idea of how
RIZAL HIGH SCHOOL
Information and Communication Technology PAGE 5
to use it well, so for the ICT students who learned to enhance their computer

literacy skills, they would be able to add up more experiences as they learned.

In addition to helping us better and further develop our literary abilities,

knowing how to utilize sublime text may have a big impact on us ICT students.

Once we learn how to increase our learnings in sublime text.

It develops all the skills required for the student or user to effectively

gain a lot of experience and make advanced systems on their own. It also

demonstrates that sublime text is packed with powerful features like multi-line

editing, build systems for dozens of programming languages, regex find and

replace, a Python API for developing plugins, and more. This is the main reason

why sublime text is popular among those who have just started programming.

The aim of the study on Sublime Text's use in boosting IT students'

computer literacy skills is to better understand the potential benefits and

effectiveness of using this software application in the context of ICT education.

Students may practice utilizing a professional-grade software application,

Sublime Text, and increase their computer literacy and coding skills by doing

so.

In conclusion, it's crucial for ict students to understand how to utilize

sublime text correctly and how helpful it is. It gives users and learners all the

skills they need to quickly get a ton of experience and develop sophisticated
RIZAL HIGH SCHOOL
Information and Communication Technology PAGE 6
systems on their own. The ability to successfully utilize computers and related

technologies is described as possessing the knowledge and skills that range from

basic computer usage to expert computer programming.

Statement of the Problem

The main goal of this study is to understand how the use of Sublime Text

can enhance the computer literacy abilities of ICT students. Specifically, the

study aims to investigate the effectiveness of Sublime Text in bridging the gap

between fundamental computer usage and advanced computer programming,

making students proficient in both areas.

1. How important digital literacy is for them as a student.

2. In what ways can Sublime Text be leveraged to improve the computer

literacy of ICT students.

3. Are there particular features within Sublime Text that can help them

bridge the gap between basic computer usage and advanced programming

effectively.

4.What are the current challenges and obstacles that ICT students face.

5. How does ICT students overcome these obstacles in improving their

digital literacy.

Theoretical Framework
RIZAL HIGH SCHOOL
Information and Communication Technology PAGE 7
This study is supported and anchored in the theory of Developmental

Perspective through Early Childhood and The Diffusion of Innovations theory:

The Diffusion of Innovations theory (Everett Rogers,1967) was used to

support the understanding of the use of Sublime Text in enhancing the computer

literacy skills of ICT students. This theory was developed by Everett Rogers and

looks at how new ideas, technologies, or innovations spread and are adopted

within a social system.

Understanding Adoption Patterns: The Diffusion of Innovations theory

identifies various groups of adopters within a population, such as innovators,

early adopters, early majority, late majority, and laggards. This theory can be

applied to computer programming literacy in a number of ways. This idea may

be used to examine how various people or groups pick up programming abilities

in the context of computer programming literacy. Some people might adopt

programming early, while others might adopt it later or after it has widespread

acceptance. The hypothesis of invention diffusion gained popularity thanks to

Everett Roger. This theory explains how, why, and how quickly new ideas and

technologies spread across civilizations. A road map for how they will allocate

variables in the marketing and creating of their product may be created by

designing teams using the complicated process of innovation's characteristics.

The roots and application of the diffusion hypothesis of innovations are diverse

and cross disciplinary. Relative advantage, compatibility, intricacy, trialability,

RIZAL HIGH SCHOOL
Information and Communication Technology PAGE 8
and observability are some of these traits. The theory aids in identifying the

traits and qualities of programming languages, platforms, or tools that increase

or decrease the likelihood of their adoption by people or organizations in terms

of computer programming competence.

According to Weber and Grieff's study from 2023, A (Cognitive)

Developmental Perspective through Early Childhood, this study is based on the

use of ICT skills to develop 21st century skills. The literature emphasizes the

value of ICT skills in 21st-century education, stressing seven abilities: technical,

informational, communication, collaborative, critical thinking, creative, and

problem-solving. These constructs are crucial to the current study. However,

because of developmental difficulties, applying these abilities in early childhood

education is still difficult. This study examines the antecedents of seven

cognitive developmental antecedents and five additional antecedents in young

children. It suggests combining these skills in a kid-friendly manner.

Significance of the Study

The following would benefit from this study:

Students. By doing this study, the researchers will aid students in

understanding how to employ sublime text to improve their computer literacy

abilities and will offer crucial details that may be used to enhance computer-
RIZAL HIGH SCHOOL
Information and Communication Technology PAGE 9
using strategies. They will be equipped with the necessary knowledge to uphold

and support someone's computer literacy.

Teachers. Because they are in charge of the students as instructors,

teachers can utilize this research to advise their senior high school pupils when

utilizing a computer. Additionally, it can benefit them since this research can

show them how exquisite literature improves kids' computer literacy.

Additionally, it can offer helpful knowledge for enhancing computer literacy

abilities.
