Sample Paper - 03 (2023-24)

Maximum Marks: 80

3. Attempt questions based on specific instructions for each part. Write the correct question number in your answer sheet to
indicate the option/s being attempted.

SECTION A – READING SKILLS

1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions:
1. The role friends play in our lives has become significantly greater now than at any other time in our history. Today
many of us live and work great distances from where we were born or have grown up & are separated from our
original families. The pain we feel when we are away from our families can be significant.
2. The happiness of the individual relies on friendships that form a necessary human connection. It is perfectly normal
to need and want friends and depression is more prevalent among those who lack friends. They lack the intimacy and
richness friends can bring into our lives. Frequently friends reflect similar values to us. Yet these values are often
different from the ones we grew up with; they are the values we created for ourselves in our adult lives.
3. Communication skills are fundamental in all friendships. The more friends and acquaintances one has, the greater are
one’s communication skills. Some call these, people skills.
4. Like watering a plant, we grow our friendships (and all our relationships) by nurturing them. Friendships need the
same attention as other relationships if they are to continue. These relationships can be delightfully non-judgmental,
supportive, understanding, and fun-filled.
5. Sometimes a friendship can bring out the positive side that you never show in any other relationship. This may be
because the pressure of playing a 'role' (daughter, partner, or child) is removed. With a friend, you are to be yourself
and free to change. Of course, you are free to do this in all other relationships as well but in friendships, you get to
have lots of rehearsals and discussions about changes as you experience them. It is an unconditional experience
where you receive as much as you give. You can explain yourself to a friend openly without the fear of hurting a
family member. How do friendships grow? The answer is simple. By revealing yourself; being attentive;
remembering what is most important to your friend and asking them about it; put yourself in their position; showing
empathy; seeing the world through the eyes of your friend, you will understand the value of friendship. All this
means learning to accept a person from a completely different family to your own or perhaps someone from a
completely different cultural background. This is why we have learned tolerance. In turn, we gain tolerance and
acceptance for our own differences.
6. Friendships are made by being considerate which means all the communication skills come into play: active listening
skills, questioning skills, negotiation skills, reflecting content skills, reflecting emotion skills and editing yourself.
7. Friendships offer a great opportunity to learn about yourself because a friend can reflect back to you ‘how you come
across in the world’. They also allow you to practice skills in dealing with 'personal boundaries' by looking after
yourself as well as your friend. They help you develop resilience in relation to the wider society that would be
beyond your family.

Subject Negative influence of advertisements
Sir,
Through the column of your prestigious newspaper, I wish to draw the attention of the people towards the negative
influence of advertisements on their minds. These days advertisements on television are a great source of information.
They impart awareness to consumers, which directly benefits the companies. Firms and companies spend a high amount
of money to hire famous public figures like actors and cricketers to endorse their products. This cost is added to the price
of the products and passed on the customers. These advertisements create an unexpected and hypothetical world for its
viewers which binds them to purchase the products. But the matter of concern is that many of these companies showcase
useless commodities on television just for monetary gains. In many cases, superstitious beliefs are instilled in the minds
of people that they may fall into trouble if the advertiser’s products are not used. They make the advertisements
glamorous to draw the attention of the viewers but are actually promoting negative influences, especially in the minds of
the younger generation.
Through your newspaper, I would like to spread awareness among the people to rationalise things and prevent
themselves from being blindfolded by misleading advertisements.
Yours sincerely,
Radha

6. The word “Father” is a verb that means sire of a child. The definition of the father has changed throughout the centuries.
Still, one thing never changed: fathers are always considered the secondary caregivers of a family, which may include
their parents as well. Generally, the father is responsible for providing clothing, shelter, and bread and butter to their
mouth. He is considered as the saviour and protector of the family. He stands against all the odds protects them from all
the evils in the world.
He provides basic education for the child. Let it be schooling or social and personal development. The children are the
by-product of what the parent has taught them throughout their life. The father has to maintain a proper balance between
administration and affection to build the child’s character.
Fathers are the essential part of the family as they lay out the foundation, which binds the family and its members in
harmony. He teaches them how to live responsibly and respect others in society as well as in their family. Children have
innocent minds that the father later moulds and makes them into a man who, in the future, will lead his family.

CULTURAL CLUB BAGS TROPHY

(by Navin, XI D) The cultural club of our school added another feather to its cap when it won the trophy in inter-school
music and dance competition held at Sophia School, Meerut. Our school team participated in solo as well as group items
of music and dance. Kathak dance by Mohini, ghazal by Renu, folk song by Urvashi and group song were highly
acclaimed. We were rated second in the group dance, bhajan and geet. We won the trophy for our overall best
performance. The students and teachers had worked hard for a month. They hired costumes and rehearsed three to four
hours a day for each item. In spite of initial nervousness, the performance on stage was splendid.

10. Answer any five of the following questions in 40-50 words each:
1. When he got rid of his fear of water that had been haunting him since childhood, Douglas realised that the only thing
that one has to fear is the fear itself. If one can overcome his fear, then there is nothing that one cannot achieve.
2. Life is all about living and let others live. Life should not have any associations with death. We fail to understand that
world peace and harmony are hampered by our activities and it is time we think of some solution for the problems
existing in the world. We have created a threat to humanity. Our life depends on our activities so we should just do
constructive things by indulging in self-introspection.
3. Aunt Jennifer is tortured by her dominating husband and hence her hands shiver. Even after death, Aunt would carry
the fear of her domineering husband as she would yet bear the burden of her wedding band on her finger. The ordeals
faced by her in an oppressive marriage would continue to terrify her.

5. Subbu was a multi-faceted genius. He was a poet, a writer and a great actor. He gave a new meaning and direction
not only to Gemini Studios but also to the art of film-making by using all his energy and creativity to the company’s
advantage. Moreover, because of his noble and charitable nature, he was loved by almost everyone.
6. Umberto Eco’s American publisher didn’t expect to sell more than 3,000 copies of 'The Name of the Rose’ in
America. The novel, actually, dealt with medieval history and delved into metaphysics and theology. The publisher
felt that in a country where nobody had seen a cathedral or studied Latin, such a book might not get enough
readership. But, actually the book sold two or three million copies in the US.
11. Answer any two of the following questions in 40-50 words each:
1. The title Journey to the end of the Earth is quite justified by the writer ‘Tishani Dosi’ through this chapter. A visit to
Antarctica thrilled the whole troop and made them realized that Antarctica is the world's coldest, driest and windiest
continent. Their visit seemed to be very fruitful because without reaching there physically, one can't experience the
immensity and importance of Antarctica and its great role in balancing the ecosystem.
2. A prediction, by the State astrologer, stating that a tiger would be the cause of the Tiger King's death was made when
he was only ten days old. Although the Tiger King killed all the hundred tigers to prove the prediction wrong, it was
ironic that he was killed by a wound caused while playing with a wooden tiger, which he bought for his son as a
birthday gift. A small wooden piece pierced through his hand and the infection spread fast. The doctors could not
save him and thus the wooden tiger caused his death.
3. The brightness that prevailed in Antarctica was surreal (strange) as the austral summer light remained for 24 hours in
the continent. The silence there was ubiquitous (widespread) interrupted only by the occasional avalanche or calving
ice sheet.

12. Dear Sophie,
Last evening, I saw you near the canal, waiting for Danny Casey. It seems that you have developed an infatuation with
him, idolizing him as your escape from reality. I understand that it's natural to have dreams and aspirations, but it's
important to accept the reality of life and not get lost in fantasies.
Here is my advice to you:
Embrace the present: Instead of constantly daydreaming about a future with Danny Casey, try to focus on the
present moment. Appreciate the beauty around you, the relationships you have, and the opportunities that come
your way. Life is happening right now, and it's important to make the most of it.
Set realistic goals: It's great to have dreams and ambitions, but it's equally important to set realistic goals that you
can work towards. Instead of fixating on a relationship with Danny Casey, think about what you can do to
improve yourself, pursue your passions, and achieve personal growth. This will give you a sense of purpose and
fulfillment.
Face challenges head-on: Escaping from reality may provide temporary relief, but it won't solve your problems
or help you grow as an individual. Instead of running away from challenges, face them head-on. Embrace the
difficulties and learn from them. This will make you stronger and more resilient in the long run.
Surround yourself with positive influences: It's important to surround yourself with people who support and
encourage your personal growth. Seek out friends and mentors who inspire you to be the best version of yourself.
Their guidance and perspective can help you navigate through life's challenges and keep you grounded.
Practice self-reflection: Take time to reflect on your thoughts, emotions, and actions. Understand why you feel
the need to escape from reality and explore healthier coping mechanisms. Engage in activities that bring you joy,
help you relax, and promote self-care. This will help you find balance and contentment in your everyday life.
I hope this advice is helpful to you. Remember, life is a journey, and it's important to embrace both the ups and downs.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to support you.

Keats: Beauties of nature are like a boon for us. Tell me about your experiences Jennifer.
Aunt Jennifer: I have always been fascinated by the beauty of nature, especially the tigers. That is why I embroidered
the motif of tigers on a tapestry. My niece (poet Adrienne Rich) described these tigers as bright topaz denizens of a
world of green in her poem. They are fearless and pace in sleek chivalric certainty. To me, they represent strength,
courage, and beauty.
Keats: I can see why you find the tigers beautiful. They embody the qualities that you admire. However, beauty is not
just about the external appearance of things. It is also about the emotions and feelings that they evoke in us. In my poem
"A Thing of Beauty," I talk about how beauty has the power to take away our sorrows and provide us with a sense of
peace and tranquility. It is a guiding force that, when accepted and appreciated, enters into one's heart and helps to clear
one's path through life. Do you agree with me?
Aunt Jennifer: Yes, I do. I believe that beauty is not just about the external appearance of things. It is also about the
emotions and feelings that they evoke in us. My tigers represent strength and courage, they also evoke a sense of awe
and wonder. They remind us of the beauty and power of nature.
Keats: Exactly. Beauty can be found in the most unexpected places, and it is up to us to recognize it. Whether it is the
beauty of nature or the beauty of humanistic traits like strength, courage, and kindness, it is important to appreciate and
cherish it. As I have said earlier, nothing but a thing of beauty can only be a perpetual source of joy.
Aunt Jennifer: I completely agree with you, Keats. Beauty is eternal, and it is up to us to recognize and appreciate it.
13. The brief association that I had with Mr. Lamb has changed me from a bitter, pessimistic, and complex-ridden boy to a
mature and confident person. The interactions I had with him had a deep impact on me as my attitude towards life began
to transform. Mr. Lamb’s unfailing optimism and unending enthusiasm encouraged me. The conversation with him about
everything and everybody being essentially the same, his notion of beauty being relative, his talk about pretty girls and
love, his concept of the world and friendship, and the incident of the timid man, all fascinated and inspired me.
Gradually, I was able to shed my old self and rediscovered my life. I was able to experience the joy of little things of life
like raindrops falling pitter-patter on the roof. Thus, my brief association with Mr. Lamb became a turning point in my
life as it helped me to come out of my shell. I came across all the qualities and attitudes that were required to bring such
changes to my personality.

Most often I wonder whom I would have married if I had not met Hana. She has been such a great support to me through
my thick and thins that words of thanks would not just be sufficient. The incident where she went against herself to stand
by me was my decision to help the American prisoner of war. I could very well notice how she had to struggle to
reconcile her loyalty to her country with her moral duty. Not only she went against her loyalty but also assisted me in the
medical operations and the anesthetics while I was operating on Tom (the American prisoner) because Yumi, the nurse
had refused to do so. She even managed all the chores herself when the servants left our home in protest. Despite being
married for so many years, she is still the same loving wife. She has been my emotional anchor and has helped me
navigate any moral dilemma that I have faced until now.
