OCTH 342: NDT PRACTICAL TEST

1. Due date
The video and write up are due together. The date will be decided on together for each
group. Please email a link to Heather (coombeh@ukzn.ac.za)

2. Allocation of group
• Divide into groups of 3
o 2 student will be the THERAPIST/camera person
o 1 student will be the CLIENT with a CVA

2. Case outline
You can choose from the following two scenarios:
1) Your client is in the early stages post CVA, with a flaccid upper limb and lower limb
with some difficulty with trunk control. This would allow for activity in sitting and
supported standing.

2) Your client is in the early-stage post CVA with mild increase in upper limb and lower
limb tone with minimal return of upper limb flexion, abduction and lower limb hip
flexion and abduction.

Please stipulate other specific aspects of your client’s stage of recovery, and a little
background information about your client.

3. Task Requirements
• Plan and demonstrate a 15-minute-long treatment session for one of the scenarios.
There should be a 5-minute warm up/preparation session prior to the 10-minute
activity demonstration.
• Complete a write up for the session outlining your aims for the session, treatment
principles and the NDT techniques/principles that were incorporated.
• Use real materials, props, and equipment for the stimulated activity.
• You must facilitate (using NDT techniques learnt) normal movement patterns and
demonstrate correct handling of affected side.
• Facilitate transitions in your activity for example, sit to stand for activity in standing
or a transfer form wheelchair to plinth for a seated activity.
• Use weight bearing where appropriate.
• Consider the positioning of the client, material, activity, and the therapist.
• Analyse action as the client moves through the activity
4. Some suggested activities (Please note these are suggested not prescribed)
1. A domestic activity in sitting, for example, making biscuits, rolling the dough, cutting
shapes with the cutter, placing on a tray
2. A domestic activity in standing, for example, loading a top loader washing machine
or making a sandwich
3. An adapted game in sitting
4. An adapted game in standing
7. Dressing upper body, shirt with buttons
8. Dressing lower body, elasticated trousers
9. Washing face and brushing teeth at basin in standing
10. Shaving face at basin in standing
11. Applying make –up in front of a mirror in standing
