ABSTRACT

Coconuts (Cocos Nucifera) being one of the largest growing crops in our country, Philippines has a lot to
offer not just its fruit but also its entire existence, no wonder why it is called the ‘Tree of Life’. On the other
hand, consumption of liquids such as bath waters, laundry waters, and etc. has become a part of our daily
lives as we need it to survive. But because of lots of factors water interruptions were often experienced. The
used of Coconut Husk Fiber as a Natural Filter was already proven from the past researcher and is still being
used as a natural coagulant for its components that enables it to be used as a filtering agent. This study has
determined that Coconut Husk Fibers are mediums that can be used for filtering Laundry Waste Water. Two
groups with the same experimental procedure but with different materials were used to determine the
results to be compared to come up with conclusions. The researchers test the pH level of the Two groups
with 30 samples each, the said test was made after the filtration of the liquid happened. We found out as
the data presents that Group A with only Coconut Husk Fibers has more significant usage in terms of pH level
testing than the Group B with Coconut Husk Fiber, Charcoal and Rocks.

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Coconut is one of the most common fruits in the Philippines. In fact, according to the Philippine
Statistic Authority there were over 4.06 million metric tons of coconuts were produced last 2020 around
October to December. Coconut has a lot to offer, not only the fruit itself but we can use its coir or the
coconut husk for such needs. A lot of us only know that the only way we can recycle coconut husk is by using
it as a cleaning agent especially after using some wax on the floor but we don’t know that it has a lot to
offer. But the main problem is we don’t know what the other use of this object so it’s easy for us to throw it
away anytime, anywhere. In line with this, According to Salman Zafar (2020), Coconut husk and Coconut
shell are two of the most common agricultural waste in the Philippines together with rice husk, rice straw
and bagasse.

Based on the Research conducted by Qingyue Wang and Jayanto Kumar Sarkar (2018), Coconut husk
is composed of high amounts of lignin and cellulose which makes its calorific value high. To be exact, it is
composed of cellulose, lignin, pyroligneous acid, gas, charcoal, tar, tannin, and potassium.

Water on the other hand is one of the things that people need every now and then especially these
days during the pandemic, taking a bath every single time we step outside for a long time is essential. Water
is also one of the things that we need to wash our clothes, wash the dishes and etc. and by that, according to
the recent study made by Vicente B. Tuddao Jr. PhD. (2019) we lose wastewater that accounts for more or
less than 7,465 Million Cubic Meter. Based on a research done by Aguilar et al (2014), wastewater treatment
is the process of removing existing contaminants to make water fit for disposal or reuse. Waste water
generally contains 99.9% water and 0.1% of solid impurities; thus, it has a large potential as a source of
water for different purposes such as fish ponds, comfort rooms, cleaning source, among others. Treated
water can be used back into the natural environment without adverse ecological impact. In the Philippines,
the most commonly used treatment methods for beverage companies are pond/lagoon system and
activated sludge system.

So according to the facts above, coconut husks are considered as the best natural organic growing
medium in the world. According to study made by Suria Mohd Samdim, et.al (2013), it is proven that coconut
shell absorbs oil and can remove contaminants, tastes and odors from drinking water.

RATIONALE OF THE STUDY

Coconut husk is proven to effectively remove a wide variety of unwanted particles and pollutants.
Husks are composed of high-grade carbon which is ideal for filtration. On the other hand, Wastewater is the

water used by residences that has become too polluted for further use and is then resulted to be thrown
away.

In this research, coconut husks are used to filter wastewater –specifically laundry wastewater.
Through the treatment of wastewater, the amount of waste that is usually released into the environment is
reduced thus improving the environment's health. By doing so, the government in turn reduces the health
risks associated with environmental pollution, and reduces the water loss induced through water pollution
(Dakkak, 2021).

It is important to address that the filtered laundry wastewater will not be used to drink but is
designed to be used for cleaning, gardening, and other activities that doesn't include risking the health of the
people.

In conclusion, this study is significant especially at this time of pandemic where we result to save the
limited resources that we have. Saving water will help not only humans but our environment.

2. Physical composition of the water, since the researchers are going to use the tap water and it will
not be laboratory analysed.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The study entitled “Coconut (Cocos Nucifera) Husk Fiber as a Natural Filter for Laundry Waste
Water” focuses on the ability of coconut husk to filter waste water. Laundry waste water was picked because
it is the most common waste water that greatly contributes to the waste that is being produced in the
environment. On the other hand, coconut husks are chosen because of its availability, and its ability to filter
waste water.

The study is limited on how effective coconut husks' filter is in comparison to a normal filter which
has coconut husks, charcoal, and rocks. In line with this, the basicity of the test liquids will be measured in
contrast the study is not limited on the testing of microorganisms living in the bleach and water solution
before and after the experiment.

METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

The study will use a Pre-Experimental Research Design in a form of Static Group Comparison because
the researchers aims to observe and compare the results between two groups, group A will consist of
coconut husks while group B of the research will consist of coconut husks, charcoal and rocks.

LOCALE OF THE STUDY

The research will be conducted on one of the researcher's houses at Phase 2 Package 2 Block 29 Lot
29 Bagong Silang Caloocan City including the fact that we are in the midst of a pandemic. The parent of the
researcher will help to lessen the hazards, also Personal protective equipment will be used.

SAMPLING

The researchers used Random Sampling by assigning each material (Coconut husks, Rocks, and
Charcoals) a number, and used Spin the Wheel site that will simulate the choosing of the sample by random.
The researchers acquired the samples, particularly Coconut husks and Charcoals, by purchasing from Phase 1
Bagong Silang market and other markets near the researchers’ houses. Other sample that is to be used are
recycled and assured to be clean for it to be used in the experiment.

The researchers used two (2) treatments which are the Coconut husks’ fiber alone and Coconut
husks’ fiber, charcoal, and rocks into sixty (60) samples of Bleach-Water solution. Thirty (30) samples to each
treatment are used, so the researchers used sixty (60) samples all in all.

DATA COLLECTION

Collection of Liquids

The household wastewater in this research was substituted by a bleach and water solution as
prescribed and also for the researchers to be safe from harmful chemicals. The said solution were collected
by the researchers and was kept on a container. The said solution was sealed to protect it from other
contaminants and to decrease the chance of evaporation of liquid.

Collection of Materials

a. The material called coconut husks were collected by the researchers. The collection of the said
material happened at the nearest public market wherein the researchers bought 8 Kilograms of coconut
husks to be used in this research.
b. The researchers recycled a total of sixty (60) plastic containers that is 200 ml in size. And this is
what the researchers used as a container for the bleach-water solution.
c. The researchers used Tap Water for the Bleach and Water Solution, the Tap water were collected
in their respective faucets.
d. The Detergent Powder that is used in the experiment were collected by the researchers and was
bought in the nearest sari-sari store.

Selection of test Organism

During the study, coconut husks are selected from the Coconut Palm Tree (Cocos Nucifera) as a test
organism. It is not necessary to find other species for it only has one (Cocos Nucifera). Experimentation of
the coconut husk being a natural and organic coagulant will take place by examining and filtrating bleach and
water solution that has sixty (60) samples all in all. The compactness of the grained coconut husk should be
observed when it is placed on the prototype container.

TESTING PROCEDURE

Preparation of Coconut husks Test

With the minimum work, the filtration will give result after an hour. Using a pH water tester,
researchers will check the pH level of the bleach and water solution before and after the filtration.

a. Using a cutter, cut the lower portion of the plastic bottles.

b. Prepare the bleach and water solution that consists of 20 grams of detergent powder and 2.4 liter
of tap water.
c. Put the ground coconut husk in the upper portion of the bottle that you have cut. Make sure that
you will place the material inside the bottle compactly.
d. Spill the water through the coconut husk filter and wait for it to travel down the filter. Meanwhile,
use the lower portion of the bottle that we cut to support and catch the filtered water.
e. Test the filtered water to get the basicity and record the result, repeat the process on all of the
sample and do not forget to clean the pH water tester to avoid unnecessary errors.

Procedure on pH level Testing

2.1 Using a pH Water tester, test the bleach and water solution before the experiment and record it.
The pH meter’s logarithmic scale is set from 1-14. Wherein 1-6 is the acidic level, 7 is neutral and 8-14 is
alkaline.

2.2 Firstly, take a bottle and pour it with 40 ml of bleach and water solution. Then, switch your pH
meter on and allow it to warm up first for about 30 minutes. Make sure that the pH Water tester will be
clean from the previous liquid to protect and to avoid unnecessary errors.

2.3 After the warm up, shake off the excess water into the pH tester and place it into the bleach and
water solution and wait for a couple of minutes to have stable reading. Continue the process to get another
reading to compare. And lastly, after the process, record the outcome.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT (Validity and Reliability)

The researchers will use a pH water tester to determine the pH level of the bleach and water
solution on each sample after it passed down the filter material. To make sure that the results of the
experiment are precise and accurate, the researchers will make sure to clean the instrument before and
after testing a sample to avoid unnecessary errors.

DATA ANALYSIS PLAN

Data will be analyzed and tested using Water tester to determine the total contaminants or
substances that has been removed and how acidic or basic the water is. The level of significance of the
experiment was stated to be non-significant (p > 0.05), and significant (p < 0.05).

In analyzing the data, the researchers will use independent t-test to compare the data collected from
the two groups. The mean will be used in describing the pH level of the Bleach-Water solution in both of the
pre-test and post-test from the two groups. The variance of each groups and the standard error of difference
between means will also be computed to proceed with the utilization of Independent t-test. In determining
whether there will be a significant difference in the pH level of Bleach-Water solution in both groups, the

Independent t-test will be utilized. Similarly, the null hypothesis will be tested at .05 level of significance. The
equation that the researches plan to use is:

t=

Where in,
= mean of the pre-test
= mean of the post-test
- = standard error of difference between means

ETHICAL ISSUES

The pre-cautionary measures would be observed by the researchers especially the bleach and water
solution that became a substitute for the household laundry wastewater as prescribed for the researchers to
be safe from harmful chemicals. The researchers will be making sure to conduct the research carefully and
will be fully responsible in conducting this research. The researchers made sure of using Personal Protective
Equipment.

Byproducts will not just be thrown away in this research, all of the outputs or materials after the
research will be recycled. Coconut husks can be used as a compost pit as it is good on decreasing the
unwanted odor and lessen the appearance of pests. The procedure on using this as a compost pit is to dry it
using sun's heat to kill unwanted contaminants, and after it dries add it on your soil. On the other hand the
filtered water can be used for gardening plants.

May 18, 2021 - it was not part of our research timeline but this announcement is one of the most
important reminder that the lead proponent have given the members, so that the researchers can collect
the materials needed as early as possible without being pressured by time.

June 9, 2021 – The lead proponent ordered a pH water tester from a seller online, it was a rush order
because our group need it already. So glad that the seller was responsive. The lead proponent asked them
for an actual picture and sent this. The lead proponent don't have the chance to ask the delivery rider if he
can take a picture of him because it was raining that day.

June 11, 2021 –The lead proponent’s father brought a sack of coconut husk, he insisted that he
should be the one who will collect it, for he has contacts/friends in Bulacan where he bought this sack of
coconut husks.

June 15-16, 2021 -The conduct of the experiment were held and made for two consecutive days,
naming the dates June 15 and June 16 2021. Sadly only the two of us (Ms. Serrano and Me, Mr. Baetiong)
made it. For such reasons that Ms. Lampa has cough, sneeze, and headache for the past 3 days so we don't
want to risk her, and did tell her not to come. While Mr. Lumayno have some errands to do. But for them to
be part of the phase 6, I asked Kimberly Lampa to record the data and write it on a clean sheet of paper
while on the other hand, Jasper Lumayno is the one I assigned to edit the Video Documentation.

June 16, 2021 -I asked Ms. Kimberly Lampa to list all the data in our video, she sent the result/datas
rightaway.

June 16, 2021 -Mr. Lumayno did edit our Video Documentation of the Conduct of the Experiment,
they did their job.

June 23, 2021 -For the reason that only two of the researchers has a laptop, I asked them to do the
data analysis on Microsoft Excel based on the tutorial that our Capstone teacher sent, I asked them both so
we could see if they will have the same result. Also, it was a busy and tiring day so we have done it late at
night. Note that the procedure that we did in the Video Documentation is not yet final, we could discuss
about it and look for any wrong doings. The purpose of the video is to be transparent that the researchers
did watched the tutorials and tried their very best to test if the datas are normally distributed or not.
