C. ABSTRACTION
Matter has three states that are
commonly found on earth, they can be
solid, liquid, and gas. Each state has
its own unique set of characteristics.

What are the different properties that

you learned? Physical Property and Chemical Property

We can classify matter into several

categories.

Pure substances and Mixtures are two

broad categories.

A pure substance has a constant

composition, they have exactly the
same make up and compositions.

We can divide pure substances into

two classes: elements and compounds.

What are the two sub-class of pure

substances? The two sub-class of pure substance are
elements and compounds

Pure substances that cannot be broken

down into simpler substances by
chemical and physical changes are
called elements.

Elements contains just one type of

atom.

Where can you easily find the different We can find it at periodic table of
element? elements.

That being said, give me one of the Students answer may vary
elements found in periodic table of
elements.

Examples:

Compounds contains the atoms of

two or more element connected by
chemical bonds.

How can you distinguish compound? e can distinguish compound if it contains

one or two atoms of an element

Compounds are pure substances that

can be broken down by chemical
changes. This change may produce
either elements or other compounds,
or both.

There is an easier way to distinguish

compounds, it is by looking at the
chemical formula of substances.

Take a look at these examples

The elements present in water are

hydrogen and oxygen
What are the elements present in
water?
Compounds contains the atoms of two
or more element connected by chemical
Again, define compound. bonds.

2 hydrogen atoms and an oxygen are

combined together to form water.

Mixture contains two or more

substances that are physically, not
chemically, combined.

There is no chemical force acting

between the two or more substances
that are mixed, but they still exist
together. They can either be
heterogeneous or homogeneous in
nature.
Compounds are chemically bonded while
mixture is not.
How can you differentiate the bonds in
compound and mixture?

Very good, class

Mixture can either be heterogenous or

homogenous in nature.

Heterogenous Mixture from the

word “hetero” which means “different"

is a mixture that comprises two or

more substances that can be distinctly
observed, and even separated
relatively easily.

Different samples from the mixture are

not identical to each other. There are
always two or more phases in a
heterogeneous mixture The substances can be easily observed
and separated.
What is main feature of heterogenous
mixture? There are always two or more phases
present in heterogenous mixture.

Example of heterogenous mixture:

Students’ answers may vary

Give me an example of heterogenous

mixture

Homogenous Mixture has a uniform

composition and appearance.
Individual substances that constitute a
homogeneous mixture cannot be
visually differentiated.

There is only one phase of

matter observed in a homogeneous
mixture at a time. Homogeneous mixture cannot be
visually differentiated.
What is main feature of homogenous
mixture? There is only one phase of matter
observed in homogenous mixture
