IV. PROCEDURES
PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES
1. Prayer
Good day, Grade 10-Emerald!
Before we begin our lesson, let us first
acknowledge the presence of our Creator
through an opening prayer, to be led by Jeymar. Let us pray and feel the presence of our Almighty Creator.

(The students will pray.)

2. Greetings
Again, good morning, class! (The students will do their usual response.)

How are you today? We are doing well today, Sir

It's great to hear that you are doing well. I hope

that everyone is feeling the same.

3. Checking of Attendance
May I ask our Secretary to check if all of our
classmates are present today?

Is there anyone absent today? (The class Secretary will check and report the attendance
to the class.)
4. Classroom Regulations
Let us not forget our classroom rules.

M - Mutual Respect: Treat everyone in the

classroom with kindness and consideration.
A - Attendance: Attend class regularly and
arrive on time.
S - Silence during instruction: Maintain
silence when the teacher or others are speaking
to ensure everyone can hear and focus.
C - Collaboration: Work together with
classmates in group activities and projects,
respecting each other's ideas and contributions.
I - Individual Responsibility: Take
responsibility for your own learning and behavior
in the classroom.
Y - Your Time Matters: Use your time wisely
during class, staying focused on tasks and
avoiding distractions.
A - Aim for Cleanliness: Keep the classroom
clean and organized, disposing of trash properly
and taking care of shared resources.

Is that clear, class? (The students will do their usual response.)

A. ELICIT
Class, before we begin our lesson, let's have a quick

recap of our previous lesson through an activity called

"The Tower of Evo”.

Figure 1: Tower of Evo

Grade 10-Emerald, are you ready? (The students will do their usual clap.)

Let's begin the recap of our previous lesson. You will be

divided into three groups. As you notice on the badges
you are holding, it is divided into three colors (red, blue,
and yellow) as it represents which group you will be in.
You will be given an incomplete Tower of Evo. Each
group will complete the Tower by providing the
appropriate terms or phrases on the empty boxes. The
first group to complete the task will win a prize!

Are my instructions clear? Yes, Sir!

If there are no more questions, you have 10 seconds to

be with your group mates. And, your 10 seconds starts (The students will proceed to their designated groups.)
now!

10-Emerald, are you ready? (The students will do their usual clap.)

If everyone is ready, let’s begin! (The students will do the activity.)

Let us give the winners “Good Job Clap” for their (The students will do their usual clap.)
excellent performance!
And, let us give ourselves an “Aling Dionisia Clap” for
doing a great job! (The students will do their usual clap.)

Our lesson for today is related to the preservation and

adaptation of species which tackles the ecosystem
stability. Our new lesson is about Biodiversity and
Stability.

B. ENGAGE
Class, as you look around the classroom, you can see
blocks of different shapes scattered everywhere. And,

you may also observed that each block is labeled with

different plants and animals. These blocks will be used
in our next activity called “The Tower of Bio”.

In this activity, each Material Manager from your group

will choose one among these envelopes in front. Each
envelope contains a list of species and the number for
each species. Your task is to collect all the blocks that
corresponds to the required species and their numbers.
After which, you have to stack all the blocks together.
Your tower must not collapse for five seconds after
stacking all the blocks.

Take note that the first group to complete the task will
win a prize.

Are my instructions clear? Yes Sir!

If there are no more questions, 10-Emerald, are you (The students will do their usual clap.)
ready?

If everyone is ready, let’s begin! (The students will do the activity.)

Let us give the winners “Good Job Clap” for their (The students will do their usual clap.)
excellent performance!

And, let us give ourselves an “Aling Dionisia Clap” for (The students will do their usual clap.)
doing a great job!

Based on the activity you have undertaken, we learned

the relationship between biodiversity and stability. The
even distribution of different blocks on each layer of your
tower is important to build a stable tower. Same with the
species. An ecosystem with biodiversity is one important
requirement to maintain its stability.

We will discover more about that later on.

C. EXPLORE
Before we continue with our lesson, have you ever
wondered why some animals you see frequently in your
community back when you were younger seem to be
gone or fewer now?

Have you ever wondered what might be the cause of

their disappearance in your area?

First, let us know what biodiversity is.

Who wants to read the definition on the screen?

Yes, Justine! Biodiversity is a term that describes how varied living

things are in a specific are.

Thank you, Justine!

In simple terms, it answers the question of “How many

kinds of living things can be found in a community?”

It is important to maintain biodiversity in a community as

they serve different purposes in maintaining its stability
and/or sustainability.

For instance, a growing population of a single species in

a single area might have a negative effect on the later
period.

For your next activity, we will explore more about the

factors affecting the population of species. We will be
having a group activity in which you will be divided
according to your interests.

Each group will be given a specific picture that

represents a particular scenario depicting a factor
affecting population density. Your task is to showcase
your understandings on the factor through a literary art
(poem or spoken word poetry), performing arts (song,
jingle or drama), or visual arts (drawing or comic strip).

At this point, we have three areas of learning. Proceed to

"Mga Anak ni Balagtas" area if you are fond of writing
poems, "Artists Guild" area if you are interested in
drawing and lastly, the "Star Magic" area for those who
want to express themselves through acting or stage
performance. (This activity aims to highlight
differentiated instruction inside the classroom.)

The Star Magic group will be creating a short stage

performance that showcases their understandings on the
factors they were assigned.

The Artists Guild group will be doing a drawing, while the

Mga Anak ni Balagtas group will be presenting a short
poem respectively.

Grade 10-Emerald, are you ready to start with your (The students will do their usual clap.)
activity?

If so, you may proceed to your respective areas of

interest and work on your activity. You are given 10
minutes to finish that. When you're done, you will
present your work in front of the class.
D. EXPLAIN
Okay class, time is up! You will now present what you
have prepared in front of the class. Each group will be
given at least 2 minutes to present. Please take note that

the best presentation will receive a prize!

Let us start with the Mga Anak ni Balagtas.

(The first group will present their poem about Density-

dependent limiting factor.)

Thank you, Mga Anak ni Balagtas group.

Up next, Star Magic group!

(The second group will present their stage performance

about Density-independent factor.)

Last but definitely not the least, Artists Guild, please (The third group will present their illustration about limiting
present your output. factors on population density)

(The students will do their usual clap.)

Great job, 10-Emerald!

Let us give ourselves a “Good-job Clap” for a job well

done.

You have identified the different factors affecting the

population density and showcased your deeper
understanding on its concepts.
E. ELABORATE
For a deeper understanding of our lesson, let us study
them one by one.

The “Mga Anak ni Balagtas” group was given this picture Sir, the picture shows animals with no food.
(referring to Density-dependent limiting factors). Again,
what does this picture depict?

Very good!

What do you think will happen to the organisms living in Sir, their number will reduce.
the area that is affected by these scenarios?

That is right! It is because, this picture depicts a density-

dependent limiting factor.

When the population reaches a certain size, there won’t

be enough resources (food, shelter, water) for all the
organisms. Eventually, their population will stop growing
when it reaches the maximum number of organisms that
can be supported, or “carried” by the environment.

The second group performed a scenario that depicts this Sir, the picture shows natural disasters and human
picture. Again, what scenario does Star Magic group activities that are altering the natural phenomena.

presented?

That is right!

What do you think will happen to the organisms living in Sir, their population will decrease.
the area that is affected by these phenomena?

Very good!

That is actually called as density-independent limiting

factors.

In this type of limiting factor, regardless of the size of the

population as long as the area they are living in is
affected by these phenomena, it could cause a decrease
on their population.

The third group presented different scenarios. Again, Sir, diseases or parasites, competition for resources,
what are those scenarios depicting? predation and emigration.

Very good!

Those are actually the limiting factors that depend on

population.

For the diseases, where do disease spread faster? On Populated area.

populated area or unpopulated area?

That is right. If the population in an area is too dense,

diseases can spread faster which may cause decrease
in the population.

How about competition for food, what will happen when (The students will raise their hand.)
there is always a competition because the amount of
food is not enough for the entire population, anyone who
knows what may happen?

Yes, Christian. Sir, the population will eventually decrease because some
will die due to hunger.
Exactly! Thank you, Christian.

Next is predation. What will happen if there are more (The students will raise their hand.)
predators than preys in a single area?

Yes, C-jay? The population will decrease also, Sir. Because some will
die due to hunger and some will look for place with more
food.

That is right! Thank you, C-jay!

That would indeed lead to our fourth factor which is

emigration.

When there are no more food on a certain area, what will Look for area with more food.
the organisms most probably do?

That is correct! They will stay on that place until the

resources will not be enough anymore, and the
emigration cycle continues.

Remember class, biodiversity is the greatest contributor

in creating a stable environment. Same with our
community, if there is an unbalanced number of
population, it will also affect us on the later period.

For instance, we always observe that whenever people Sir, people will kill the snake.
see a snake on fields or forest, what do we always do?

That is right. However, if we keep killing snakes

whenever we see one, their number will eventually
decrease on our area. Thus, there would be not enough
predator for rats. And, rats will become an invasive
species on our area because they have few predators
that would balance their population.

In an ecosystem, every species provides a vital role in

maintaining its balance and stability. We get food and
shelter from trees, tiny organisms nurtures our lands,
farm animals are another source of food and many
others.

If we wanted to enjoy the benefits we acquire from our

ecosystem, we must maintain this biodiversity that we
have for it maintains the stability that we need.

Any questions so far? None Sir?

F. EVALUATE
Great job, Grade 10-Emerald, for participating in our
class discussion on Biodiversity and Stability and taking
thorough notes during our lesson.

At this point, let us assess our awareness on the current

condition of our local community when it comes to
maintaining the biodiversity and ecosystem stability
through an activity called “My ECO-Pyramid”.

In this activity, you were given individual handout that

contains a figure of a Pyramid with three layers. Your
task is to fill-in the layers of the Pyramid by providing
what is being ask in each layer.

Yes Sir!

You will be given three minutes to complete the task.

When you’re done, just hold your handouts for your next
activity.

Are my instructions clear?

If there are no more questions, let us start our activity.

Again, congratulations, Grade 10-Emerald!

G. EXTEND
For your assignment, we will be doing our pledge to
protect and conserve our ecosystem and its biodiversity.
Earlier in our last activity, we created our “ECO-
Pyramid”. At this juncture, let us stand and have our
pledge to be the first one to act for our environment.

Raise your right hand and repeat after me.

A life with science is a life of excitements, and each day
will be filled with surprises.

You should always be ready for the surprises each day

may bring forth.

So, Grade 10-Emerald, are you ready?
