21. Modal verbs: making deductions

Open your Book on page 78 and look at exercise 1. Study the words and phrases used for
describing people. Notice that when describe what someone looks like we use with, and when
describe what someone is wearing, we use in. (Otvorite udžbenik na stranu 78 i pogledajte vježbu
1. Provjerite riječi i fraze koje se koriste za opisivanje ljudi. Obratite pažnju da kada opisujemo
nečiji izgled, koristimo predlog with (=sa), a kada opisujemo šta neka osoba nosi od garderobe,
koristimo in (=u).)

- The man with curly hair must be Jenny's brother. (=Mora da je čovjek sa kovrdžavom
kosom Dženin brat.)

- The girl in long black dress might be the a model. (=Djevojka u dugoj crnoj haljini je
možda manekenka.)

Now listen to the recording 10.3 from your CD-ROM and do exercise 2a) and b). Then try do
exercise 3a) and b) on page 79.) (Sada odslušajte snimak 10.3 sa vašeg CD-ROM-a i uradite
vježbe 2a) i b). Zatim pokušajte da uradite vježbu 3a) and b) na strani 79.)

Some modal verbs (must, can't, could, may and might) can be used for making deductions.
However, their use is different. (neki modalni glagoli (must, can't, could, may i might) mogu se
koristiti za pravljenje zaključaka. Ipak, njihova upotreba je različita):

Must is used when we talk about something which we believe is true. (Must se koristi kada
govorimo o nečemu za šta vjerujemo da je istina.)

– He must be talking Spanish. / He must like the present. (= Mora biti da govori španski. /
Mora da mu se sviđa poklon.)

Can't is used when we talk about something which we believe is not true. (Can't se koristi kada
govorimo o nečemu za šta vjerujemo da nije istina.)

– He can't be talking Spanish. / He can't like the present. (= Ne može biti da govori
španski. / Ne može biti da mu se sviđa taj poklon.)

Could, may and might are used when we talk about something which we think is possibly true.
(Could, may i might se koriste kada govorimo o nečemu za šta mislimo da je možda istina.)

– He could/may/might be talking Spanish. / He could/may/might like the present. (=Možda

govori španski. / Možda mu se pokloni sviđa.)

From the examples above you can see that modal verb + be + v-ing is used when we make
deductions about the action happening now, and modal verb + infinitive is used when we make
deductions about state. (Iz gornjih primjera možete vidjeti da se modal verb + be + v-ing
koristi kada donosimo zaključke o radnji koja se događa sada, a modal verb + infinitive se
koristi kada donosimo zaključke o stanju.)

Now do exercises 3c), d), e), 5 and 6 in your Book. (Sada uradite vježbe 3c), d), e), 5 i 6 u vašem
udžbeniku.)
