I. LEARNING ACTIVITY

1. Explain the two reasons to use the top down structure in technical writing.

1. Easy to navigate

EXPLANATION:
This indicates that emphasizing the key point beforehand can help readers
understand the context of your message and help in their decision to continue
reading or not. Readers will be able to determine whether the article is worth reading
and whether it contains the information they require in the context through the
reading until they are satisfied or can navigate the information needed. It became
important because, by doing so, you will draw the reader's attention when they are
reading the opening sentence or section of the paragraph, at which point they will be
able to determine whether the message you are conveying will be helpful to them.

2. Readers only reads what they need

EXPLANATION:
Readers have their patience tested when reading a message from different reading
materials because they must spend time reading and understanding the content of
the message. Readers' only goal is to navigate and understand the message that
they require, they read and obtain what they needed, become stuck on a specific
message that they require, and if they do not find what they require, they seek out
another reading material that will satisfy them. The top-down structure is important
because it determines whether the readers will continue to read the entire paragraph;
without it, the readers will eventually not read because it will not satisfy their need for
information. If the readers only read what they need while the main point was already
given to them, then it is worth continuing to read; if they are not able to understand or
navigate the main point, then what could be the point of writing the information you
want to share? The information you’ve created was meant to be shared, and how will
you possibly share it without first giving the audience or readers what they need to
continue and support the information you gave them?

3. Why is it important to know your audience before writing? Cite instances

Knowing your intended audience, or who will be reading your text, is one of the most
important aspects of writing effectively; Since you need to know who you want to
connect with through your writing. It will be simpler for the writer to address those
objectives if they understand the needs of their audience. Knowing the demands of your
audience will make it easier for you to approach them and convince them to read your
work. Writers who are aware of their audience will be able to recognize theories or
supporting evidence that will facilitate the structuring of information.
For some Instances…

 Since I'm a student, and a lot of students suffer from depression, from academic
performance to personal issues, in that case, I can go to some students who have
overcome depression and get information on how they got over it. I can also go to a
psychiatrist who specializes in assessing those who suffer from depression and ask
them about the causes or signs of depression and how they can overcome it. After I
have the information from my interviewee, I can make a draft, arrange and finalize it.

- In this scenario, I am the writer, my subject or audience is the students who

suffer from depression, and my main point is how they suffer from it and how
they can overcome it. Since I know my audience and their needs, I will have an
idea of how I will get information that relates to the situation and needs of my
audience.

 In the business industry, people have their manuals and give them to their customers
after they buy a product. Since they are selling an electric fan that needs to assemble
manually, they need something that will guide them after buying it, and that is the
provided manual booklet. The manual will serve as their guide on how to assemble the
product. I’ve seen a lot of manuals, and fortunately, they used or printed the text in
different languages, and that is good so that the buyers who won’t understand English
can still read because there is another translated text that would fit the language that
they are using.

- The company knows the difference between their customers' languages that they
are using, and that is why they printed their manual in different translated
languages so that their customers would still read the manual and not make a
mistake in assembling the product they bought.

II. ASSIGNMENT (You don’t need to answer this. Just look for it to prepare you in your next
lesson.)
How do you apply for a job? What are the requirements?
