PHYSICS WORKSHEET (chapters 6 and 7)

Q.1. How does the mutual inductance of a pair of coils change when?

(i) distance between the coils is increased and

(ii) number of turns in the coils is increased?

Q.2. Two identical loops, one of copper and the other of aluminum, are rod with
the same angular speed in the same magnetic field. Compare (i) the induced emf
and (ii) the current produced in the two coils. Justify your answer.

Q, 3 The current flowing through an inductor of self-inductance L is continuously

increasing. Plot a graph showing the variation of

(i) Magnetic flux versus the current

(ii) Induced emf versus dI/dt

(iii) Magnetic potential energy stored versus the current.

Q.5 The induced emf is also called back emf. Why?

Q.8. Two identical bar magnets are dropped from the same height simultaneously,
one falls through a copper tube and the other falls through air, will they reach
ground at the same time? Justify.

Q.9 In a series LCR circuit connected to an ac source of variable frequency and

voltage v = Vm sin ωt, draw a plot showing the variation of current (I) with
angular frequency (ω) for two different values of resistance R1 and R2 (R1 >
R2). Write the condition under which the phenomenon of resonance occurs.
For which value of the resistance out of the two curves, a sharper resonance is
produced? Define Q-factor of the circuit and give its significance.

Q.10 The instantaneous current and voltage of an a.c. circuit are given by
I= 10 sin 314 t A and V = 50 sin 314 t V. What is the power dissipation in the
circuit?

Q 11.What is the direction of induced currents in the metal rings 1 and 2 if the
current through metallic wire is increasing steadily?

Q 12. How does the self-inductance of an air core coil change, when i) the number
of turns in the coil is decreased? ii) an iron rod is introduced in the coil?

Q 13. Magnetic flux in closed circuit varies with time t according to the
equation φ = (6t2+5t+ 1) Wb. If the resistance of the circuit is 10 Ω,
what is the magnitude of induced current at t= 5s?

Q.14 How is the large scale transmission of electric energy over long distances
done with the use of transformers?

Q.15 A lamp is connected in series with a capacitor. Predict your observations

when the system is connected first across a d.c. and then an a.c. source. What
happens in each case if the capacitance of the capacitor is reduced?
