1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 To outline work method for the complete installation of Carbon Steel Sch
40 pipes and accessories.

1.2 Demonstrate the total quality commitment in implementing, managing and

executing of the works.

1.2 To define preparation and installation work instruction procedure for

Carbon Steel Sch 40 pipes and accessories installation to be follows by
site trade men and workers.

2.0 SCOPE OF WORK

2.1 The work shall be applied to complete the installation of the Carbon Steel
Sch 40 pipes and accessories installation with reference to the Energy
Commission requirement and regulation.

2.2 Demonstrate the total quality commitment in implementing, managing and

executing of the works.

2.3 Ensure that the welding works of the pipe are executed in according with
the contractual requirement, applicable engineering codes and standard,
statutory laws, regulation and the approved shop drawings.

4.0 PURPOSE

To ensure that the Carbon Steel Sch 40 pipes and fittings installation is comply to
project specifications and standard.

5.0 RESPONSIBILITY

7.0 HANDLING AND STORAGE

7.1 When materials arrived to site. It will be stored in a clean and dry area for
daily usage. Please view the location of storage at the list of attachment.
The temporarily store will be erected at the location given. Propose location
for storage material at level P5.

7.2 Alternatively, the bulk of materials shall stored at a designated place nearby
to the project site. This is to ascertain that the materials to be easily
available for delivery to site.

8.0 WORK METHODOLOGY

8.1 Pipeworks

8.1.1 Mark the pipeline location in the building according to the approved
shop drawings.

8.1.2 Survey the pipeline level where possible to avoid or minimize

obstructing other M&E services.

8.1.3 When pipeline passes through the building wall, a PVC pipe sleeve
shall be provided. The pipe sleeve provided shall always 1 " NPS
bigger than the pipeline size and shall be of minimum equal length
to the wall thickness. Example for 4” gas pipe to use 6” size for
pipe sleeve. Gap between sleeve and pipe must be filled with fire
proof material.

8.1.4 For concealed piping inside wall or slab, the pipe shall be wrapped
tape with 50 % overlapping.

8.1.5 For exposed piping, the pipe shall be painted. Only approved paint
shall be used. Pipe inside riser shaft also to be painted.

8.1.6 All pipes shall be cut to length requirement and shall prepare for
welding.

8.1.7 In a situation where pipeline route is obstructed by other M & E

services, the client’s representative shall be informed to resolve the
issue.

8.1.8 Pipe hanger shall be installed at the right position, location,

orientation, and level. Spacing of the pipe hanger shall be as per
specifications.

8.2 Pipe Painting Procedure

8.2.1 Purpose
8.2.1.1The painting procedure underlines the method statement for
painting of steel pipes that is conducted either at the workshop or
dedicated work area at the site.

8.2.2 Preparation works before painting

8.2.2.1 Arrange pipes to be stored in a covered area.

8.2.2.2 Material required for painting shall be properly stacked on

wooden or steel support and should not be laid directly on the
ground.

8.2.2.3 Surface to be painted must be clean & dry. Clean the pipe
surface by using pressurized water or wipe with wet cotton rag.
Grease, oil rust, scale and dirt must be removed and the pipe
must be dry be paint coatings are applied.

8.2.3 Application of paint

8.2.3.1 Paint shall be stirred thoroughly before use.

8.2.3.2 Apply one coat of red-lead oxide primer by using a paint brush
on the pipe external surface as soon as possible and allowed to
dry.

8.2.3.3 Apply one coat of high gloss paint as finishing coat, yellow in
color, by using a paint brush and allowed to dry.

8.2.3.4 Painted pipe shall be allowed to use only after the paint has
been thoroughly dried.

8.2.3.5 The painted pipes are to be stored on a covered area. If

necessary these pipes are to be covered with canvas.

8.2.4 Labeling

8.2.4.1 After painting has been completed, identify pipeworks with clear
labels as per Client’s Specifications. Labeling should be spray
painted and not sticker.

8.2.4.2 Carry out labeling work with arrows to indicate flow directions.

8.3 Pressure testing

8.3.1 Prior to pressure test, completed pipeline shall be cleaned all

kind of dirt or weld slag.

8.3.2 For partial testing, compressed air will be used for pressure test.
Once all pipe connected, Nitrogen will be used for pressure test.

8.3.3 All outlets shall be plugged off except the pressure inlet point of
pipeline.

8.3.3.1 Attach one pressure gauge to the pipeline. Pressure

gauge use shall be calibrated.

8.3.3.2 Pressurized each completed pipeline using compress air

at 50 psig for 1 hours.

8.3.3.3 Hold the test pressure for 1 hour. If pressure remains, the
line is deemed as gas tight.

8.3.3.4 If pressure drops, check testing apparatus connections

and shut-off valves for leaks. If this is still evident, apply
soapy solution to detect any leaks. All leaks must be
rectified and the test repeated.

8.3.3.5 On successful completion of the leak test, purge the

compress air out of the pipe system.

8.3.3.6 Purging point shall be carefully selected in order that

residual air and gas is completely clear from the pipeline.

8.3.3.7 Purging point shall be whenever possible located

outdoor. All kind of ignition sources, flammable items
shall be kept away from surrounding area.

8.3.3.8 The pressure test shall be approved by Resident

Engineer at site.

8.4 Cleaning

8.4.1 Clean up the working area completely after works done.

9.0 INSPECTION AND TESTING

9.1 All services shall be tested/inspected for:-

I. Submission Checklist
II. Carbon Steel Sch 40 pipe installation checklist

9.2 During work progress and final work done shall carried out inspection and
testing to ensure conformance of installation work.

9.3 The project work shall follow the work methodology. The site
representative will carried out the procedures, Inspection Request (IR) will
be forwarded before an inspection to be carried out by consultant’s
representative. The inspection request (IR) shall be enclosed with the
checklist, drawing and submission checklist.

10.0 SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

10.1 All work shall be carried out in accordance to the safety standard required
by the relevant authorities.

10.2 P.P.E shall be worn at all time to avoid any unwanted incidence.

10.3 Proper attire, safety shoes and helmet shall be provided.

10.4 Any work above ground 1.5m, worker must wear safety harness. Working
platform will be used. Scaffolding will be erected for such purposes.

10.5 Scaffolding shall be tagged and inspected by competent person.

10.6 All workers shall adhere to safety manual at all the time.

10.7 When work is completed, housekeeping will be required to keep the work
area clean and tidy. Thus to ensure the place is safe.

11.0 QA/QC ASPECTS

11.1 General

The purpose of the quality control is to provide a proper guideline for the
Carbon Steel Sch 40 pipe installation such that the following targets will be
attained:-

• To achieve consistently high quality standards of workmanship in

all aspects of the work.

• To provide a safe working environment.

• To follow work methodology to ensure the quality of construction.
