Detailed Lesson Plan

In
Biodiversity

Most Essential Learning Competency:

Explain the advantage of high biodiversity in maintaining the stability of an
ecosystem.(S8LT-IVh-21)

I-Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students shall be able to:
a. explain correctly biodiversity through watch-pair-share activity;
b. differentiate the 3 levels of biodiversity namely: species diversity, genetic diversity
and ecosystem diversity through the 3 column chart;
c. suggest creatively solutions on how to protect biodiversity through “paint me a
picture.”

II-Subject Matter:
a. Topic: Biodiversity and its 3 levels (Grade 8)
b. Reference: Grade 8 Science Module (Department of Education)
c. Materials: video clips, ppt. presentations, laptop, projector,
Pentel pens, pictures.
d. Values: Understand the importance of biodiversity and infer that the more
diverse an ecosystem is, the more stable this will be.
e. Skills: critical thinking skills, communication, analysis
f. Strategy used: watch-pair-share, 4A’s

III-Procedure:

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS ACTIVITY

A. Preparatory
1. Routine
a. Prayer

-Let us all stand for the opening prayer. Lisa please -All students will stand up and pray.
lead the prayer.

-Good morning Class! - Good morning sir.

-You may now take your seat. -Thank you sir!

b. Checking of attendance -None sir!

-By the way, class, is anyone absent today?

c. Reminders/Setting of Standards
-before we proceed to our lesson for today I have to
Remind you of our classroom rules. First, if you want
to recite just raise your right hand. Second, if
someone is talking in front of you, keep silence.
Otherwise, respect and listen.
-Am I understood?
-Good.
-Yes sir!
c. Review:
-Yesterday, we discussed about the DNA molecule.
-Hazel, kindly give the base pairs of the following
sample strand of nucleotide.
-Very good. -T, C, and A.
d. Motivation
-Ok class, I have here a short video clip.
What I want you to do is to observe and take note
for the important points presented in the video.
(the teacher and the learners will have a short
interaction about the video presented).
-So, what do you learn from the video presented? -(Answers may vary)
(the teacher will introduce the new lesson).
-Thus, this morning our topic is all about Biodiversity. (students will read the objectives)
But before that, let us be guided by our lesson - At the end of the lesson the students shall be able
objectives. Everybody please read our lesson to:
objectives. a. Explain correctly biodiversity through
watch-pair-share activity;
b. Differentiate the 3 levels of biodiversity
namely: species diversity, genetic
diversity
And ecosystem diversity through the 3
column chart;
c. Suggest creatively solutions on how to
protect biodiversity through paint me a
picture.

B. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES

a. ACTIVITY
-In order for us to have a meaningful discussion, let
us have first an activity.
-The first thing you do is you are going to watch
another video clip that I am going to present with
you. While watching the video clip I want you to
answer the ff. questions.

What is Biodiversity?
What are the 3 levels of biodiversity?
Describe each.
(Students will take note the guided questions)
-Please take note it first.
-Yes Sir.
-Ok. Please watch this video.
-Yes Sir
(Watching time. The video clip contain a little bit
(All students will watch the video)
explanation about biodiversity and its levels)
(After 2 minutes).

-Now the video is over.

2. ANALYSIS
(Possible/expected answers)
-The video presented talks about biodiversity. So,
-Biodiversity is short term for biological diversity.
what is biodiversity?
-Biodiversity talks about variety of organisms in
terms of gene, living in different habitats or
-Yes, Mia?
ecosystem.
-Okay, what else?

-Correct. According to many biologists, Biodiversity is

the sum of all the different species of animals,
plants, fungi and microbial organisms living on Earth
and the variety of habitats in which they live.
-What about the 3 main types of biodiversity? -The 3 main types of biodiversity are: species
-Yes, Jay-an? diversity, genetic diversity and ecosystem
diversity.
-Correct. Based on the video, who among of you -according to the video, a species is a group of
here can explain to me what is the term species? genetically distinct organism that can have
-Yes, Grace? offspring.

-Correct. Species refers to a group of organisms that -Species diversity refers to variety of organism in
have distinct traits. However, when you encountered terms of their species.
“species diversity” what does it mean?

-Yes, Emelie?
-Okay. Thank you. Species diversity is just simply
talks about different kinds of organisms. For
example, the species of dog is far different from the
species of bird.
-did you get class? -Yes Sir.

-Okay. How about the second type or level of

biodiversity, which is the genetic diversity?
-Genetic diversity refers to differences among
-Yes, Hazel? organisms in terms of gene.

-Very Good! Genetic diversity talks about differences

among species of organisms in terms of gene they
contain. Although all organisms in the same species -No Sir.
are quite related to each other, but they are not
100% identical. Thus, every species of organism is
unique. For example, a species of human. Are all
human the same in terms of skin color and physical
traits?

-Okay. Even the skin color trait would reveal that

certain human is different from other human. And
that is the concept of genetic diversity.
-An ecosystem diversity talks about differences of
-How about the third one? The ecosystem diversity? organism in terms of their habitat in which they
-Yes. Riche? live.

-Very good! An ecosystem diversity talks about the

different kinds of places where organisms live and
the dynamic interconnection between them. For
example, animals that live in the dessert has distinct
adaptation compare to animals that live in the
forest. Meaning to say they differ in terms of
location or habitat.
-Yes Sir.
-Are the concepts of biodiversity clear to you class?
-Very good.

-This time, the entire class will be divided into 2. -Yes Sir.
-Now go to your respective groups.

Ok. Please listen to my instruction first. In this

activity, you are going to differentiate species
diversity, genetic diversity and ecosystem diversity.

Differentiate the ff. using the 3 column chart.

-You are only allowed to finish the given task within 5

minutes and afterwards, each group must have to
choose a presenter.
-are all my instruction clear to you class? -Yes Sir.

-Ok. Your timer starts now.

3. ABSTRACTION
(Students answer may vary)
-(After the allotted time)

Differentiate the following using the 3-column

-Very good!

4. APPLICATION

-Since you already explain biodiversity including its

levels. I want you to express the benefits of
biodiversity through “paint me a picture”

-Ok class, please listen to my instruction first.

-This activity is called “paint me a picture”. We’ll
remain in your previous groupings.
-Now, go to your respective groups silently.

-So, I am going to project a certain scenario about

problems regarding biodiversity. In this activity you
are going to suggest certain solution on how to
address that problem through “paint me a picture”.

-You will be given 6 minutes to do the task.

-Are all my instruction clear class? -Yes Sir!

-Ok. Good.

Criteria for Judging

Content – 10 points
Creativity – 5 points
Total: 15 points

The world has been suffering from global

warming. Sea level rises due to melting of ice caps
in Arctic region such as North Pole and South Pole
which causes many islands to submerge and some
species of polar bears got extinct.
What are some ways can you help reduce global
warming?

-After the allotted time. (G1,and G2 will prepare)

-Let us start with group 1. Any representative from
the group?

(the teacher observes and evaluates using the (Any representative among each group will
criteria) explain)
(depicting of concepts may vary)
-Ok. Kindly clap your hands for a job well done. And (students will clap themselves)
please return to your proper seats.

-Did you learn today class? -Yes Sir!

A. Valuing: What do you think is the

advantage/importance of having high
biodiversity in maintaining the stability of an
ecosystem?

-And since you did learn something today. Let us

have an evaluation.
