Imagine your teacher starting the lesson with this announcement: “I’m going to give you ten
minutes to play with your mobile phones. I’m not going to tell you what to do in those ten
minutes. You can respond to text messages, surf the net, share photos on Facebook –
whatever you want.”
You probably love this idea, but then the teacher continues, “After those ten minutes, I’m giving
each of you a container. You’re going to put your phone in that container and you aren’t going
to touch it for three days. In fact, you aren’t going to use any digital devices for three days. Not
at school, and not at home.”
This actually happened to students in Years 5-13 at Convent & Stuart Hall in San Francisco.
Students at the school study with iPads and mobile phones. Technology helps them, but it also
prevents them from doing other things, like talking to people or doing sport. The teachers
wanted their students to realise that. Did the experiment succeed? Some students felt very
unhappy without technology. But others said they felt free without screens and keyboards. So
