Design of Bevel Gear Lec 1
Design of Bevel Gear Lec 1
Types of gears
Straight bevel gears are the simplest form which has straight and tapered teeth.
Spiral bevel gears have curved oblique teeth on which contact starts at one end of the tooth and
progresses smoothly to the other end..
d = mN
Pc = πm
The pitch angles are defined by the pitch cones meeting at the apex, as shown in the figure.
They are related to the tooth numbers as follows:
Where γ & are respectively the pitch angles of pinion and gear.
Cone Distance Ao is given as:
Ao = 2 MG = i = reduction ratio
𝐴𝑜
The face width (F = ) is given as:

Force Analysis—Bevel Gearing
In determining shaft and bearing loads for bevel-gear applications, the usual practice is to use
the tangential load that would occur if all the forces were concentrated at the midpoint of the
tooth.

The forces acting at the center of the tooth. The resultant force W has three components:
a tangential force Wt, a radial force Wr, and an axial force Wa.
