Activity 2: Let us ponder!

1. In your point of view, which of these civilizations had the great

contribution in the development of science and technology in the history?
Why?
 Science and Technology has generated new knowledge, such as discoveries of new
principles, and has dramatically contributed to the development and progress of people’s
lives, the economy, and the society throughout the years. Indeed, the contributions of
different civilizations play a crucial role when it comes to its success. However, from my
own point of view, Sumerian Civilization has the biggest contribution when it comes to
science. Egyptian Civilization on the other hand, contributes in the development of
technology. Among their achievements related to science were Cuneiform, Uruk City,
Great Ziggurat of Ur, Irrigation and Dikes, Sailboats, Wheel, Plow, and Roads. Paper or
Papyrus, Ink, Hieroglyphics, Cosmetics, Wig, and Water Clock or Clepsydra, these are
the significant contributions of Egyptians associated to technology. These two civilizations
thrived which eventually led to a vast amount of prosperous and fruitful life. If the said
civilizations weren’t discovered, the world of science and technology won’t definitely exist.
Moreover, these discoveries have created and strengthened the fundamentals of modern
science and technology which helps uplifts the quality of our life. It also became a reason
for a continuous development of science and technology at this time.

2. Which of these scientific developments has great impact in your life?

Kindly give an instance.
 Personally, it would be the invention of the great Johannes Gutenberg which is printing
press, a more reliable way of printing using a cast type. This discovery marked a clear
shift away from handwritten books to printed ones. The impact of printing press was
beyond imaginable, it allowed a rapid spread of accurate information, helps disseminate
knowledge and ideas wider and faster, and it makes people’s life easier than ever.
Imagine, if printing press wasn’t discovered, a person had to typically copy a book and
write it by hand, page by page. Thus, a progress won’t exist and we wouldn’t have books,
newspaper, posters, brochures and magazines. For instance, now that we are currently
facing the pandemic and education became a challenge to everyone particularly in the
Philippines. People are introduced to the so called “Modular and Online Learning” where
teachers need printers to produced self-learning modules. Thus, it would be difficult to us
college students as well as other learners if printing press isn’t discovered as technological
advancement to education specially today that modular learning is used.
