1. Science and technology throughout history

Precolonial period
During precolonial period, before Spaniards came to the Philippines. Early Filipinos were
highly superstitious. They do know how to read and write in their own system but they seem not
to have developed a written literary tradition which led to poor development of science and
technology. They also had no calendar but counted the years by the period of the moon and from
one harvest to another. Science on this period, medicines are the used of certain plants and herbs.
For technology, they made simple tools and weapon from stone flakes and later developed
method of sawing and polishing stones. They learn to weave cotton, make glass ornaments,
cultivate lowland rice and dike fields of terrace fields utilizing spring water in Cordillera.

Spanish Regime
Spaniards establish schools, hospitals and started scientific research and these had
important consequences for the rise of the country’s profession. They also introduced
Christianity to us.

American Regime
Science and technology advance rapidly in this time because it was more modernized and
prioritized than the Spanish Regime. However, the industrial technology wasn’t much focused
due to free trade agreement with the United States.

Commonwealth Period
Constitution on this time acknowledged the importance of promoting scientific
development for the economic development of the country.

Since Independence
Innovation in the education and training of scientist and engineers increases this period.
2. How would Science & Technology developments affect society and the environment?
Science and Technology developments affect society and the environment, that make our
lives simpler to go by. In a way technology simplifies our lives & has an effect on the human
condition. Cultivating innovation have brought about revolutionary changes in disparate fields of
agriculture, information technology, mass media, communication, transportation, military
warfare etc. Consequently, technology has had a huge impact on society & culture by changing
expectations & realities which includes positive as well as negative effects. This has also led to
an obsession with efficiency where optimum performance of everything in life is given more
importance. This lust for perfection has led to people depreciating natural element of life.
Technology & innovation have led to large production in every field which provides a vast array
of options to people, be it consumer durables or clothes or accessories etc. this creates
materialistic tendencies among people where societies become consumerist. Moral & ethical
values are given lesser importance & things like individual wealth & capitalism become more
important.

3. What intellectual revolutions favors your sense of being part of the society? How about
you being an engineering student?
Being part of the society, a revolution in moral and social philosophy which is as relevant
and important as any other revolution, which had an impact on the society and mindset of the
people. The communities are constantly moving toward change in ideas, customs and concepts.
These revolutions shape the society and develop a goal to raise human value. These revolution
happens when the intellectuals are able to express, explain and produce a particular idea or
information, to employ them effectively in the society. Being an engineering student I have to
strive my rational thinking despite the obstacles in reforming the society or the objections when
an idea is put forward. In order for a continuous discovery of self-worth and determination
toward opportunities. I put in an application my mind for the purpose to rouse others. Finding
dignity and command to open others mind in a world of autocratic people. As an engineering
student I want to show harmony from time to time to influence others and reshaped societies
more meditative and make directive in an equal manner.
