Checking the condition of the

cylinder liners
Background On a very limited number of installations cracks were found in
the landing area of the rim of the liner.
In the long term such cracks could result in operating problems
like water leakage between cylinder liner and engine block.
Present situation has proven to be sensitive for inadequate
de-aeration of jacket coolingwater system, and/or temperature
and pressure fluctuations.

To improve the present situation the construction has been

modified. The modification concerns the following components:
• Cylinder liner
• Axial shim ring (between liner and cylinder block)
• Gas sealing ring
• Tightening procedure of cylinder head
• Machining of the landing face cylinder block according
Service Letter SL26/1302/02.

Recommendation We strongly advise to carry out the following measures at

12.000 hours overhaul (HFO) or 24.000 hours overhaul (MDO)
as follows:

Numbering of The extent of measures is depending on material number of the

cylinder liner liner. The material number can be found on the liner collar on
engine control side (X-mark)

Measures Check all cylinder liners, Mat. no 262601302ZT111 and , Mat. no

262601302ZT122 for cracks by magnetic crack detection method only.

After the crack investigation, different situations can occur.

Each situation (A,B or C) requires a separate instruction as stated below.

A Cylinder liner, Material no. 262601302ZT111 (Part code 1050-001)

1. No cracks found. The cylinder liner can be re-used. Modification

according SL26/1302/02 must be carried out for the entire engine.

Note: only if output Pe < 85% of MCR (Maximum Continuous Rating)

2. No cracks are found and Pe > 85% of the MCR.

The cylinder liner has to be renewed for type 262601302ZT122.
Modification according SL26/1302/02 must be carried out for the entire
engine.

3. If in one or more cylinder liners cracks are found:

Modification according SL26/1302/02 must be carried out for the entire
engine.

Note: Pe > 85% of MCR liner must be changed to 1302ZT122.

Pe < 85% of MCR the cracked liners could be replaced by
262601302ZT111 or 262601302ZT122.

B Cylinder liner, Material no. 262601302ZT112 (Part code 1050-001)

Modification according SL26/1302/02 must be carried out for the entire

engine.and liner must be exchanged for liner type 26260302ZT122.

C Cylinder liner, Material no. 262601302ZT122 (Part code 1050-001)

- If cracks are found the liner has to be renewed by liner of the same type
(Material no. 262601302ZT122)

Note: Only the liners where cracks are observed have to be renewed.

In any case (cracks or not) Modification according SL26/1302/02 must be

carried out for the entire engine.
