07 Piston D540 Service 15.05.2007 01 TB540/07/203 1(2)
In the future the engines R/S/BVM 540 will be equipped with gudgeon pins which differ from the
former ones in that respect that the number of the radial oil outlet openings per plain, through which
the oil is supplied to the cooling coils of the piston, bas been reduced from four to three. In order to
safeguard the piston cooling it has become necessary now to extend the circulating oil groove in the
gudgeon pin eyelet, i.e. from 113º +2 º, corresponding to a vertical chord length of 134 + 2.5 mm, to
118 º + 3 º, corresponding to a chord length of 138 + 2.5 mm (see illustration below).
Concerning the delivery of replacement gudgeon pins of the said new design we recommend that the
oil groove of all pistons with one of the captioned part numbers, which still feature the shorter oil
groove, is extended to the a fore mentioned dimension as soon as the pistons have been withdrawn
for any reason. The part number is impressed on the piston. In any case this re-machining work must
be done before installation of a gudgeon pin of this new design.
