Upgrading of camshaft
Improved performance for old WÄRTSILÄâ Vasa 32 diesel
engines
Engine type This Technical bulletin concerns WÄRTSILÄâ Vasa 32 engines fitted with
“B” type camshafts.

General Since the introduction of the Vasa 32 more than 20 years ago, several
design changes have been done to improve the performance, reliability and
economy of the engine. One important change was the introduction of the
“C” type camshaft in the beginning of the 1990s. Using this camshaft, it was
possible to reduce the thermal load on the engine, while maintaining a low
fuel oil consumption. By lowering the thermal load, the lifetime of certain
engine components such as valves and seats will be increased, and in
many cases the overall engine performance will be better with e.g. less
visible smoke. A similar Technical bulletin with number 3214T016 was
published in 1993.

Characteristics Both the inlet and the exhaust valve timing of the “C” is different compared
to the “B” type camshaft. This allows for better “breathing” of the engine and
gives the above mentioned advantages.
In some cases it will also be necessary to change the turbocharger
specification to get the most out of the camshaft modification. Please
contact your Wärtsilä service station to see whether your turbo needs
upgrading.

Instructions “B” type camshafts can be identified by the number stamped between the
cam lobes. It will read “1V14K85”, "1V14K86”, 1V14K92” or “1V14K93”. In
uncertain cases, please contact your Wärtsilä service station.

Recommendation We recommend that engines having “B” type camshafts are upgraded with
“C” type camshafts.
Note: 18V32 engines will be upgraded with“A“ camshafts, giving the same
advantages as “C” camshafts.
