Project Team: The Seven Seas

Project Name: Dodgeball Fundraiser

Team Members: Jake McKenelley, Angel McGilveary,
Steven Nguyen
Project Description:
We organized a Dodgeball Fundraiser here at Wentworth in Tansey Gym. Each player paid $5 to play.
People who decided not to play still donated money if they liked. All the proceeds we raised ($124) were
donated to the Jake Thibault foundation via GoFundMe. He is a hockey player that got injured and
became paralyzed. Originally, we hoped to have 30+ players participating but we ended up having about
10 people in the dodgeball match.

Goals and Purpose:

The goal of this project was to raise as much money and awareness as possible for a great
cause. The cause that we decided to support is a local hockey player who was tragically
paralyzed in a hockey accident. We chose this cause because we believe that we can get a lot of
Wentworth students to participate and donate. We believe that this event hits many in the area
because Jake was a local kid and was too young to be a part of such a tragedy. The end goal
that our group wanted to raise was at least $200 for the goal but also spread awareness and
thoughts for him and his family.

Execution Summary:
Overall, the project was an enormous success, when comparing it to the goals we set before
starting the project. We were able to get a large group of people together in the gym to play a
dodgeball game while spreading awareness and raising money for an especially worthy cause.
We were also able to have the athletics training staff in attendance for the event, which
allowed all the players and spectators to feel a sense of safety. We were fortunate to have two
full teams of five players each that wanted to compete in the games. We also had the luxury of
having a couple of teachers and other students who did not want to compete show up to the
gym and donate while watching the matches. After the matches were complete, we had the
chance to talk to all the players and describe exactly what the donations were going towards
while spreading awareness. The project was then easily cleaned up and deemed a success by
everyone who was involved.
Analysis Compared to Plan:
The plan went similar to the plan that we outlined before starting. We stuck to the timeline of
the project delivery and the timeline of the project day of timeline. The budget was very similar
to what we put forth before, the only real expense we had leading up to the project date was
purchasing the six dodgeballs. The timeline of the set-up and clean-up was also just as we
expected, we had plenty of help throughout the project which made the project a success.

Lessons Learned and Recommendations:

We learned that it takes a lot of steps to have a successful project. The important steps were securing
the gym and making sure we would have participants. We also learned in a project, it is good to take
pictures and record your work. It is important to look back and reflect on it. One recommendation is to
advertise your event as soon as possible. Another recommendation is having a positive outlook
throughout your project. We learned that it is important to pick a topic that has meaning to your group
as it is much more likely for group members to buy in and want to make the project a success if they
believe they are doing a good deed.
