Oral Communication in Context – Grade 11
Quarter 2 – Communicative Strategy: Affects Role of the Speaker,
Message and Delivery

I. INTRODUCTION
Effective oral communication is based on the idea that the goal of language
learning is communicative competence: the ability to use the language clearly and
appropriately to accomplish communication objectives. Success in language learning
means being able to understand and convey real meaning in actual communication
situations, not (necessarily) being able to use the language exactly as a native
speaker does.

II. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

1. Recall the distinguish types of communicative strategy through pretest;

2. Explain the effects of a shift in communicative strategy through an essay;
3. Demonstrate effective use of communicative strategy in a variety of situations;
4. Reflect on your learning on the types of communicative strategy

III. VOCABULARY LIST

• Communicative strategies are strategies that learners use to overcome

problems in order to convey their intended meaning. Strategies used may
include paraphrasing, substitution, coining new words, switching to the first
language, and asking for clarification.

• Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one place,

person or group to another.

• Linguistic Competence is knowing how to use the grammar, syntax, and

vocabulary of a language.
• Syntax is an arrangement of words and phrases to create a well-formed
sentence.

• Grammar contains rules governing the composition of clauses, phrase words.

• Morphology is the study of words, how they are formed/ analyzes the
structure of words such as root words, suffix, prefix.

• Semantics is concerned with meaning of a word/phrase/sentence.

• Phonology is the study the speech sounds

• Sociolinguistic Competence is knowing how to use and respond to language

appropriately, given the setting, the topic, and the relationships among the
people communicating.

• Strategic Competence is knowing how to recognize and repair

communication breakdowns, how to work around gaps in one’s knowledge of
the language, and how to learn more about the language and in the context.

• Discourse Competence is knowing how to interpret the larger context and

how to construct longer stretches of language so that the parts make up a
coherent whole.

V. LEARNING ACTIVITIES
PRACTICE ACTIVITY 1. OPEN UP!

What are some of the difficulties you encountered in talking to each other, if
any?

How did you work around these difficulties?

Communicative strategy is the most effective tool in delivering and
acquiring information from both speaker and listener. This is used to efficiently
share useful ideas to provide quality of interaction in communication based on
previous references.

It affects the following:

The Speaker – Chooses the most familiar topic which he is willing to discuss and
expound at the extent of his expertise. He initiates the interaction and takes control
of the success of the communication by means of proper way of presentation.

Role and Responsibilities of the Speaker – These serve as the lifeline of the quality
of interaction in communication because the speaker handles the pros and cons of
the feedback received. When these are met, he creates a diversified way of thinking.

The Audience – Refers to the listeners who may react to the ideas presented. Their
reactions may enhance or diminish the flow of the communication based on how
interesting the topic is.

Relationship - The bond between the speaker and listener which may depend on
how the discussions relate to their interests and knowledge.

Quality Interaction – This is achieved when the speaker and the listener are able to
exchange related information which improves their reception.

The Delivery – This is affected whether the listeners are able to fully understand the
concept implied or creates doubtful remarks. Proper delivery requires techniques
which demand the speaker to express thoroughly.

The Message – This is the core concept of the interaction. When the speaker is able
to answer all the questions of the listener beforehand and received by them
positively, then the message is correct and acceptable.

*When communicative strategies are used effectively, both the speaker and listener
improve their interactive inputs and outputs.
IDENTIFYING COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE AND STRATEGIES

What is communicative competence?

Communicative competence is a term coined by Dell Hymes in 1966 in

reaction to Noam Chomsky’s (1965) notion of “linguistic competence.” It is the
intuitive functional knowledge and control of the principle of language used. It has
four components:

2. STRATEGIC
1. LINGUISTIC/GRAMMATICAL Using techniques to:
Understanding and using: • Overcome language gaps
• Vocabulary • Plan/assess the effectiveness of
• Language convection communication
• Syntax/Phonology • Modify text for audience
purposes
3. SOCIO-LINGUISTIC
4. DISCOURSE
Having awareness of:
Understanding how ideas are connected
• Social rules (politeness,
through:
formality, directness)
• Patterns of Organization
• Cultural references (background
knowledge)

PROCESS QUESTION:
Based from the four components of communicative competence, what do you think
is the most difficult competence to acquire? Why?
VI. PRACTICE TASKS
News Reporting.
Directions:
1. Choose a topic to your likings (sports, politics, business, showbiz, lifestyle, K-
Drama—anything you might see reported on TV). But unlike the real anchors,
you will not be reading a script.
2. Compose your piece on the space provided below. Then, memorize your piece
and practice delivering your news.
3. In a 30-second clip, video yourself while delivering the news. Let your parents,
siblings or other family members watch your clip for observation.

VIII. ASSIGNMENT
Reinforcement Activity

Think of a time when you had to explain one message in two different
instances with varying contexts. For example, you might have told your parents over
dinner how badly you want to study in your dream university and in another
instance, you talked about the same thing with your friends while having coffee.

In an essay with a minimum of 500 words, discuss why your

communicative strategies change as there are adjustments in every speech context,
speech style, and speech act. Discuss your language, duration of interaction, your
relationship to the listener, your roles and responsibilities as a speaker, your
message, and your delivery and how these differ in the two varying instances and
contexts.
