Properties/Particle Nature of Matter Motion: Distance, Displacement, Speed, Velocity, and Acceleration
LEARNING
COMPETENCY: • Describe the motion of an object in terms of distance or displacement,
Explain how typhoon develops and how it is affected by speed or velocity, and acceleration (S7FE-IIIa-1)
landmasses and bodies of water (S8ES-IId-18).

LEARNING RESOURCES:
YouTube video on Matter - Video downloaded from YouTube on Motion
LEARNING DELIVERY Enrichment Activity 1: What’s the matter?
MODE: Direction: Based on the discussions, complete the diagram below Now Let’s understand the concept of distance and displacement with the help of
ACTIVITY
about matter. (From the module) the following diagrams:

1. How does matter differ from non- matter? What is motion?

2. What are the other properties of matter?
ANALYSIS What is reference point?

ABSTRACTION
Q1. What do scientists believe matter is made up of? How will u differentiate distance from displacement?
Q2. There are spaces between particles of matter. How do the
spaces differ in solids, liquids and gases?

• Distance is a scalar quantity that refers to "how much ground an object

has covered" during its motion. It is the length of the path traveled by a body
while moving from an initial position to a final position. There is always a distance
covered whenever there is a motion, and lastly distance measured is always
APPLICATION Q3. Give some everyday examples to show that particles are in positive.
motion.
• •
• • Displacement is a vector quantity that refers to "how far out of place an
object is"; it is the object's overall change in position. It is the shortest distance
between the initial position and final position of the body. Displacement can be
positive or negative depending on the reference point. Displacement will be zero
if the body comes back to its initial position.

1. Which one of the following statements is correct?

A. Gases cannot be compressed.
