-a function associates a numerical value to every outcome of a random experiment
-denoted by a capital letter, usually X
Domain- sample space
Range- some set of real number

Random Experiment
-an experiment that can be repeated numerous times under the same condition
-its results must be independent of one another

Outcome
-the result of a random experiment

Sample Space
-the set of all possible outcomes of a random experiment
-denoted by a capital letter, S

Discrete Random Variable


-a random variable with a finite number of possible values or an infinite number of values that can
be counted
-whole numbers

Continuous Random Variable


-a random variable that can assume in infinite number of values that can take decimal of
fractional values

Probability Distribution of a Discrete Random Variable


-is a list, a table, a graph, or a formula of probabilities associated with each of its possible values
