📍 Two Word Stage (18-24 months)

- Children acquire about 50 words.

- Begin to demonstrate understanding of word order: SUBJECT VERB OBJECT (SVO).

- Common structures:

•Doer + action (ex: “Tommy play”)

•Action + object (ex: “Kick ball”)

•Possessor + object (ex: “Daddy key”)

•Negation/Refusal (ex: “No veggie”)

- Emergence of verbs, nouns, adjectives, and intonation.

📍 Telegraphic Stage (24-30 months)

- Children experience a vocabulary “explosion.”

- Communication is pidgin-like; omission of grammatical/function words. (Ex: little words such as ‘the,’
‘a,’ ‘is,’ ‘will,’ ‘of,’ ‘by,’ pluralization, tense (past -ed), verb endings/person agreements (she eat ‘s’) are
omitted.

- Use of content words (verbs, nouns, adjectives) and some pronouns such as ‘me’ and ‘mine.’

- Word order and structure are obeyed. Considering the English word order (SVO)

(Ex: “Want more ice-cream.” “Mommy go bye-bye.” “He go play.”)

- Mastery of coordination and subordination sentences by 4-5 years old

•Coordination (Two clauses joined in a symmetrical relation): ex: “I am tall, but she is short.”

•Subordination (Two clauses joined in a non-symmetrical relation): ex: “When I am older, I am going
to be bigger.”

- Use of more complex questions and negatives appear between 2.6-3.0 years old

- Near-complete language acquisition by ages 5-6 (Helms-Park, 2018).

📌 Conclusion

- Language comprehension precedes production by several months.

- Most children with language delays, including auditory impediments, catch up by the age of 3
(DeLuzio, 2020).

📌 Key Takeaways

- Language development is a progressive process, from simple word combinations to complex

sentence structures.

- Children’s language skills are unique and develop at different rates.

- Language comprehension is an important precursor to language production.

- Support and patience are key in the journey of language development (DeLuzio, 2020; Helms-Park,
