Filter Activities without Predecessor or Successor in Primavera P6

Activities without predecessors and activities without successor in the primavera P6
schedule are known as open-end activities.
This is one of the checkpoints to any construction schedule to have all your activities
properly assigned together except the project start date and project finish date.
The first one should not have a predecessor and the second one should not have a
successor. In this article, I will explain how to filter all the activities without predecessors, all
the activities without successors, and both together.
There are two ways to find these activities.

First way
A: Filter activities without a predecessor in Primavera P6:
To filter the activities that have no predecessor defined, we make a filter using the following
criteria: All activities where predecessor equal and you do not put anything in the value,
leave it blank.
From “Filters”, choose “New”.

At the “Parameter”, choose “Predecessors” then equal will appear, and press “OK”.

This filter will show all the activities without the predecessor.

Even if you open the relationships, it will show also that all of these activities have no
predecessor.

B: Filter activities without a successor in primavera P6:

To filter the activities that have no predecessor defined, we make a filter using the following
criteria: all activities where “Successor” equal and do not put anything in the value, leave it
blank.

This filter will show all the activities without successors.

Even if you open the relationships, it will show also that all of these activities have no
successor.

C: Filter activities without predecessor or successor in primavera P6

To filter the activities that have no predecessor defined, we make a filter using the following
criteria: all activities where successor equal and do not put anything in the value, leave it
blank. Or all activities where predecessor equals and do not put anything in the value, leave
it blank.

It will show the activities which have neither predecessor nor successor.

The Second Way

From “Schedule”, click on “Schedule” then “View Log”.

When you use the "View Log” from the “Schedule" feature in Primavera P6, you can
typically expect to see the following information:
1. User Information: The name of the user who made the change.
2. Date and Time: The timestamp when the change was made.
3. Action: The specific action performed on the schedule, such as adding, modifying, or
deleting an activity, changing relationships, updating durations, or any other relevant
schedule modification.
4. Details: Additional details about the change, which might include the specific field
that was altered and the previous and new values (before and after the change).
5. Activity: The activity to which the change was applied.
6. Project Information: The project to which the activity belongs.

If you go down in the Log, you can see the activities that have neither predecessors nor
successors.

I hope this simple demonstration was useful for you, Oracle Primavera p6 is very simple and
effective software but you need to learn how to deal with it, and save unnecessary working
hours trying to find solutions to problems. My advice is to learn the p6 software from an
expert and then you will find most of the issues you faced before do not exist because you
knew how to deal with this amazing software.
