strapping by means of turnbuckles. (Vendor to nominate quantity & size of sea
containers required).
• All flanges, spigots and machined surfaces shall be suitably protected with secured
wooden panels to prevent damage during transport and storage.
• Care should be taken to suitably support each piece to prevent warping under its own
weight.
• Items packaged in sea containers must be protected from corrosive environment as
the sea containers are not hermetically sealed. Plastic wrap, desiccants, and other
corrosive inhibiting materials must be used inside the container for protection as
required.

• All flanges, spigots and machined surfaces shall be suitably protected with secured
wooden panels to prevent damage during transport and storage.
• Care should be taken to suitably support each piece to prevent warping under its own
weight, particularly girth gear segments.
• When the load is positioned on the transport bed the load must be isolated from
transport induced vibration by rubber sheeting or similar device. During any transport
by a truck & trailer with air suspension or vehicles with similar dampening the
requirement for rubber sheeting can be omitted provided the air suspension is set so
as to cushion the load.

4.0 GENERAL PACKAGING REQUIREMENTS

The general packaging requirements, applicable whenever this specification is nominated,

are as follows:
• Unless specified otherwise, packaging shall be suitable for export, including meeting
ISPM 15 export requirements.
• Equipment shall be shipped as fully assembled as possible, however when shipping
fully assembled equipment is not possible, it shall be the Vendor’s responsibility to
disassemble the equipment so that it can be properly packed and protected.
• Consideration must be given for the safe handling and unpacking of the packages.
The Vendor will be held liable for any issues that arise from non-compliance to this
specification.
• As far as practical the Vendor must optimise the size, weight and complexity of the
packaging and packaging materials to minimise the cost of transport, handling,
storage, site removal and disposal of packaging materials. Remember waste space
within packaging is a source of weakness and therefore the Vendor shall ensure that
equipment is nested and packed correctly.
• Unless specified as being suitable for airfreight, all packages shall be suitable for
extended transport by road, sea or rail.
• Final transport to site will most likely be over unsealed roads so packaging must be
suitable to ensure no transport related damage.
• Prior to packing, all equipment shall be checked internally and externally to ensure it
is free from all weld splatter, scale, rust, cuttings, filings etc as well as any other
foreign matter. Critical wearing surfaces shall be cleaned by dipping or brushing with
suitable solvent, such as petroleum, naptha, or alkaline cleaning compound. After
hydro-testing, operation, or performance testing, all fluids (e.g. lubrication oil, fuels or
water) shall be completely drained from all tanks, vessels, jacketing, piping etc., and
wiped or blown dry. Lint free rags shall be used for wiping critical wear surfaces.
• All packed goods must be secured so the loads contained within packages cannot
move during transport.
• All surfaces must be suitably protected to prevent damage during such transport.

• Rotating equipment shall be securely braced so as to prevent rotation or displacement

during handling or transport and the Vendor shall provide instructions on the correct
removal of such bracing.
• Items with bearings, including but not limited to motors and gear reducers, shall be
prepared and packed so that any movement, including vibration, within the bearings
during transport to site is eliminated, this condition is known as “false-brinnelling”.
Anti-brinelling devices shall be used for this purpose.
• Tapped openings shall be plugged with full depth threaded plugs. External threads
shall be protected with caps. Unconnected pipe threads or openings shall be covered
with threaded plugs or caps. Dissimilar metals may not be used for plugging or
protection. The intent must be to protect the threads and openings from corrosion
during transportation and storage.
• When transporting gearboxes inhibitors shall be used to protect internal surfaces.
The Vendor shall provide instructions detailing the type of inhibitor and the procedure
for its removal to the Purchaser.
• Machined surfaces shall be covered with Tectyl 506, Tectyl 122 A or approved
equivalent. Where nominated by the Purchaser machined surfaces subject to
extended periods of storage shall be covered in Densyl Tape in lieu of,the Tectyl
protection.
• Sisalkraft 310 bitumen paper or equivalent shall be used between timber and metal
surfaces to prevent timber sap and moisture corroding metal surfaces.
• Where appropriate electrical equipment, instrumentation and any enclosed sections
shall be packed with bagged desiccants to prevent moisture contamination. Where
desiccants have been used the packages shall be identified with warning tags for
removal before installation. Desiccants shall be placed such that any accidentally
spilled crystals will not damage parts or hinder the functioning of the item protected.
The quality of desiccant to be used shall be determined by the item’s surface area to
be protected and/or the volume of the enclosed space.
• Particular care shall be taken to avoid deterioration of exposed rubber or plastics
through UV and Ozone exposure during transport and storage. A common source of
Ozone is from operating induction motors.
• Painted surfaces shall be suitably protected to prevent rubbing or scuffing during
transport.
• Suitable strapping practices shall be used to secure items of stainless steel so as to
prevent deterioration of the stainless steel surfaces. At no time shall the Vendor allow
carbon steel to come in contact with stainless steel items.
• The Vendor shall ensure items of dissimilar metals are packaged separately to
prevent metallurgical contamination.
• Hazardous material will be identified, packaged, marked, stored and transported with
the appropriate Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) in accordance with all applicable
laws and regulations which govern U.S. and international shipments.
