INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
Answer both questions. Answers are to be written in the spaces provided in this booklet.
All your work must be in blue or Black ink. Any work done in pencil except drawings will
not be marked.
All working must be clearly shown.
Mathematical tables, slide rules and silent non-programmable calculators may be used.
Reference books (ie text books on qualitative analysis, etc) should not be used.

1. You are provided with the following;

BA1 is a solution of 0.05M acid Q of formula HnX.

BA2 is a solution made by dissolving 2g of Sodium hydroxide in 500cm3 of distilled water

(Na = 23, O =16, H = 1).

You are required to determine the reaction ratio between Q and Sodium hydroxide and hence

the value of n.

Procedure:

Pipette 25cm3(or 20cm3) of BA2 into a conical flask and add 2 - 3 drops of phenolphthalein

Indicator, and titrate with BA1 from the burette. Repeat the titration until you obtain

consistent results.

Record your results in the table below.

Volume of pipette used ………………………………….cm3 (½ mark)

2. You are provided with substance P which contains two cations and one anion. Carry out

the following tests to identify the cations and anions in P. Identify any gases evolved.

Record your observations and deductions in the table below. (25marks)

Tests Observations Deductions

(a) Heat a spatula end-full of

P strongly in a hard dry test

tube until on further change.

(b) Dissolve two spatula end-

ful of P in about 5cm3 of

water. To the resultant

solution add dilute sodium

hydroxide solution drop wise

until in excess and filter.

Keep both the filtrate and

residue.

4
(c) To the filtrate, add dilute

nitric acid solution drop wise

until the solution is just

acidic. Divide the acidic

solution into five portions.

(i) To the first portion of the

acidic solution, add dilute

sodium hydroxide solution

dropwise until in excess.

(ii) To the second portion of

the acidic solution, add 3

drops of sodium sulphate

solution.

(iii) To the third portion of

the acidic solution, add dilute

ammonia solution drop wise

until in excess.

(iv) To the fourth portion of

the acidic solution, add 2-3

drops of lead(II) nitrate

solution and warm.

5
(v) Use the fifth portion of

the acidic solution to carry

out a test of your own to

confirm one of the anions in

P.

(d) Dissolve the residue in

about 4cm3 of dilute

sulphuric acid. Divide the

resulting solution into two

portions.

(i) To the first portion, add

sodium hydroxide solution

drop wise until in excess.

(ii) To the second portion

add ammonia solution drop

wise until in excess.

e) (i) Cations in P……………………………….. and ……………………………….

(ii) Anion in P ……………………………………………………………………………
