Standard competence: Communicating in English at novice level
Basic competence: Understanding basic expression of social interaction in daily life.
Main objective: This course aims to permit students to ask for and express preferences in real
life situation.
Specific objectives: At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
 Ask for preference in formal ways;
 Show/express preference in formal ways
 Ask for preference in informal ways
 Show/express preference in informal manners.
WARM UP
Malian government prefers negotiation to confrontation with the rebels in the North of Mali for
solving the rebellion problem.
Discuss:
1) What do we mean by ‘negotiation’ and ‘confrontation’?
2) Why does the Malian government prefer negotiation to confrontation?
LET’S ROLE PLAY
In a supermarket
Customer: Have you got some jeans?
Seller: Would you like a big size jeans or a medium one?
Customer: I prefer a medium size jeans.
Seller: What colour do you want?
Customer: I want black.
Seller: Here are some black colour jeans. You can choose from them.
Customer: (Chooses a jeans) How much does this jeans cost?
Seller: Medium jeans? This costs 6 000 F CFA

Seller: Thank you.
ASKING FOR AND SHOWING PREFERENCES
I. Use: We ask for preference to know about what someone likes something better than
another thing.
We express preference to show that we like something better than another thing.
Example:
Moussa: Do you prefer chicken or fish?
Ami: I prefer chicken to fish.
II. Asking for preferences:
To ask for preferences, the following modal verbs and expressions can be used:
 Would you prefer ……. or ……..?
Example: Would you like soda or orange juice?
 Which would you prefer to …. or ….. ?
Examples: Which would you prefer to buy sock cap or tie?
 Do you like … better than ……?
Example: Do you like tea better than coffee?
 We can …… or …; what do you say?
Example: We can go to the cinema or to the night club; what do you say?
 Do you prefer ……. or ……?
Example: Do you prefer sandwich or burger?
 What’s your favourite …….?
Example: What’s your favourite subject at school?
 The choice is yours; ….. or ……. ?
Example: Sweetie, the choice is yours; Babemba cinema or Ibiza nightclub?
 Which do you like better X or Y?
Example: Which do you like better diamond or gold?
 Do you find … or …. more enjoyable?
Example: Do you find football or basketball more enjoyable?
III. Showing preferences:
To show or express preferences, the following modal verbs and expressions are usable:

 Use these verbs: prefer, would prefer, or would rather 


Prefer:
- Prefer + noun +to + noun
E.G.: I prefer coffee to tea -
Prefer + -ing form + to + ing
E.G.: I prefer dancing to swimming.
- Prefer +to infinitive + rather than + Bare Infinitive.
E.G.: I prefer to eat fish rather than (eat) meat
 Would prefer + TO Infinitive
Examples: I’d prefer to live in a village than in the city.
I’d prefer living in a city to living in the country 
Would rather:
Example: I’d rather stay at home than go out.
 Other expressions may be used to show preferences:
 I think I like ……… better.
 I would go for ……………
 I’d rather have …………. anytime.
 I tend to prefer -ing… to -ing… ” or “I tend to prefer X to Y”.
 I’m (rather) more interested in X than Y.
 I much prefer -ing… to … -ing.
 I like X better than Y, or I like -ing better than –ing.
 I generally find ….. more satisfactory.
 I’d generally choose …… in preference to ………
