Writing Prompt
Assuming that your reader is a candidate student, who is unfamiliar with your
department or major, write a 500 to 600-word essay introducing the field of science you
are studying at Koç University. Describe the field and its area of operations and discuss
the indirect and direct benefits it creates for human life. What do experts in the field do
and what are they involved with? What kinds of questions do they ask in their research,
and what problems do they solve? To the best of your knowledge, explain the methods
and the procedures used. In the second part of your writing, please narrate why and
how you became interested in this field of science and explain what you are expecting
to do with your degree. Conclude with a few pieces of advice to the candidate student.

Use the essay format: this cannot be a series of questions with answers. Read the
question again to figure out how to organize your essay in paragraphs.

In the last decade, surveys consistently rank "Computer Engineering" and its related
fields among the best career choices. However, despite this popularity, many
individuals are still unfamiliar with the responsibilities of a computer engineer. As a
student in this field, I often find it challenging to define the scope and specifics of what
a computer engineer does. In this essay, what do experts in the field do to solve
problems and provide benefits and what methods and procedures are used by these
experts are examined. While doing that, I will explain my plan and journey in this area
and my motivation to start this journey.

Computer engineering is a multidisciplinary field that links electrical engineering and

computer science to design and develop technological solutions to everyday or
complex human problems. Since its main goal is to solve human problems, computer
science can relate to many different disciplines such as psychology and biology. Its
field of activity covers various areas such as hardware design, software development,
data science, networking and embedded systems.

Experts in computer engineering first start by defining the problem they need to solve.
They determine whether the issue is related to hardware, such as a memory problem
in a tech device, or if it could be solved with software solutions, like developing
applications. They may also investigate if the problem involves exploring and analyzing
data. After defining the problem and the approach to solving it, experts typically
conduct research to understand the underlying principles and technologies relevant to
the problem. They may ask questions such as how to optimize hardware design for
better performance or how to develop more efficient algorithms for specific tasks.

The methods, that the experts in computer engineering fields use, can be vary
according to the problem. It includes theoretical analysis, modelling and testing the
solution. Theoretical analysis involves developing mathematical models to understand
the fundamental principles underlying the problem. Simulation involves using
computer software to model and test the behavior of a system or algorithm.

In addition to the definition and explanation of computer engineering, I want to share

with you my career path. When I started to choose my career path, I was one of those
people who could not answer what a "Computer Engineer" does. The only thing I
knew was my passion for math and problem solving. As I researched computer
engineering fields, I realized that I could explore different fields and choose my path
based on my experiences. If you decide to choose this career, the most important
characteristic you should have is the desire to constantly learn and develop because
the field of computer science is constantly evolving. I would describe myself as
someone who is interested in exploring advances in technology, which is why I chose
computer science. If you are confused about your career, my advice is that if you think
you have curiosity and are patient in dealing with problems, you can consider this kind
of career path.
