The designed hourly average flow of a municipal wastewater plant is 0.438 m /s (10MGD).
Design an aerated grit chamber where the detention time of the peak flow rate is 4 min (generally
3 to 5 min) by determining the following:
1. Peak hourly flow Q (Peak factor =3)
2. Volume of grit chamber using two chambers
3. Size of rectangular chamber (select a width of 3 m and a depth to width ratio of 1.5:1)
3
4. Air supply needed (use 0.00236 m /s . ft of length)
3 3
5. Average volume of grit produced (assume 52.4 mL/m or 7 ft /Mgal)

A bar screen is inclined at 60 angle from the horizontal. The rectangular bars have a diameter of
20 mm and a clear spacing of 25 mm. Determine the head loss when the bars are cleaned and the
velocity approaching the screen is 1 m/s. Is this a very realistic commutation in terms of what
actually happens at a treatment plant?

A rectangular settling tank has an overflow rate of 30 m /m .d and dimensions of 2.75 m deep by
6 m wide by 15 m long. Determine whether or not particles with a diameter of 0.1 mm and a
specific gravity of 2.5 will be scoured from the bottom. Use f = 0.03 and k = 0.04.
