NAVAL TERMS AND PHRASEOLOGY

1. Bitts – Strong iron post on ship’s deck for working or fastening lines; almost

invariably in pairs.

2. Bulkhead – one of the vertical wall like structure enclosing a compartment.

3. Bollard – a wooden or iron post on pier or wharfs to which mooring lines are secured.

4. Dead ahead- directly ahead of the ship’s bow in line of the centerline

5. Dead astern – directly aft of the ship in line of the centerline

6. Cleats – a small deck fitting of metal with horns used for securing lines,

7. Deck – Aboardship, it corresponds to a floor.

8. Compartment – Corresponds to a room in a building.

9. Overhead – Aboardship, it corresponds to a ceiling of a building

10. Superstructure – All equipments or fittings extending abive the hull except armaments

11. Leeward – direction away from the wind

12. Windward – direction toward the wind

13. Mast – Upright spar supporting signal yard anf antennas in a naval ship.

14. Rudder – flat vertical, movable, structure attached to the stern used for steering the

ship.

15. Galley – the ship’s kitchen.


16. Cabin – the Captain’s living quarter.

17. Quarters – living space, assembly of the new.

18. Adrift – loose form mooring or out of place.

19. Aye-aye – reply to an order to indicate that it is heard, understood and will be carried

out.

20. All hands – entire ship’s company.

21. Derrick – a crane consisting of a boom and a mast with a whip and a tackle connected

to a deck winch.

22. Draft – depth of the water from the surface waterline to the ships keel

23. Fantail – main deck section in the after part of the ship

24. Freeboard – height of ships side from the waterline to the main deck

25. Port Bow – bearing 315 degrees relative to the bow of the ship.

26. Starboard Bow – bearing 45 degrees relative to the bow.

27. Portside – left hand side of the ship facing forward.

28. Starboard side – right hand side of the ship facing forward.

29. Waterline – the line which makes the surface with the hull.

30. Secure – to make fast, to tie; an order given in completion of a drill or exercise

meaning to withdraw from drill session.

31. Watch – a period of duty, usually of four hour duration.

32. Gangway – opening in the bulwark; to give entrance; an order to stand aside and get

out of the way.

33. Fathoms – Six (6) foot unit of length.
