Instructions: Attempt ALL questions. Provide neat and clean diagrams/graphs where necessary in
your hand written solution. Marks of each question are written separately. The 5 Marks worth of
MCQs part of the midterm is included in the total of 20 Marks.
Q 1. In a pump test the suction pressure at the pump inlet is 35 kPa below the atmospheric pressure. The
discharge pressure at a point 750 mm below the inlet is 550 kPa. Hydraulic steel tubing of same
size is used for both the suction and discharge lines. If the volume flow rate of water is 85 L/min,
calculate the power delivered by the pump to the water. [2]
Q 2. The pump shown in the figure below is delivering hydraulic oil with a specific gravity of 0.9 at a
rate of 65 L/min. The pressure at A is -275 kPa and the pressure at B is 290 kPa. The energy loss in
the system is 2.5 times the velocity head in the discharge pipe. Calculate the power delivered by the
pump to the oil. [2]

with ha in feet when Q is in gpm, is to be used with a system similar to that shown in figure
below. For z2- z1 = 45 ft what is the expected flow rate if the total length of constant diameter
pipe is 700 ft and the fluid is water? Assume the pipe diameter to be 3.5 inch. and the friction
factor to be equal to 0.025. Neglect all minor losses. [4]
