6. In an open type refrigeration system 550 kg of air is circulated per hour. The air is drawn from the cold
chamber at 30 C at atmosphere pressure and compressed isentropically to 5 bar absolute. It is then
cooled to 200 C at the same pressure. Air is then led to expander where it is expanded isentropically
down to atmosphere pressure and is discharged to cold chamber. Find
a) Heat extracted from cold chamber
b) Heat rejected to cooling water/hour
c) COP of the system.
OR

bar. Assume isentropic compression and expansion. The ratio of specific heats, r=1.4 calculate
a) COP of the system
b) Compare this value with that of Carnot cycle of the temperature of ambient air and cold
chamber are 250 C and 50 C respectively
7 A vapour compression refrigerator uses R -12 as refrigerant and the liquid evaporates in the
evaporator at -150 C The temperature of this refrigerant at the delivery from the compressor is 15 0 C
when vapor is condensed at 100 C FIND THE cop if the liquid is cooled by 5 0 C before expansion by
throttling
Take specific heat for superheated vapour as 0.64 kj/kgk and for liquid as 0.94 kj/kgk The other
properties of refrigerant are as follows
Entholpy Kj/kg Specific Entropy Kj/kgk
Temp C0
Liquid h Vapour H Liquid Vapour
-15 22.3 180.88 0.0904 0.7051
10 45.4 191.76 0.1750 0.6921
