Passive voice and Active voice Use:
Passive Voice = “BE” + Past participle “Be” = am, is, are, was, were, be, being and been. 1-Active voice means that a sentence has a subject that acts upon its verb. -The subject does the action. -Pepe jumps/is jumping. 2-Passive Voice means the subject is the recipient of the verb’s action. -The subject receives the action from the verb. (The verb is the Past Participle) 3- There are verbs that cannot be in Passive because they are Illogical when in the Passive. You must use the most logical Past Participle. Verbs like “have, go” etc. 4- How do you know what Passive tense to use in an exam?? The time expression and precise information will give you the correct Passive verb tense.M S V. Ph. C = Obj. = Noun/N. Ph. Active: Xavier cleans the black board. Active: He is studying languages. Obj.= Subj. V. Ph. Agent + Obj. (Obj. Pronoun) Passive: The black board is being cleaned by Xavier/him. Passive: Languages are being studied by him. Object Pronouns = me, you, him, her, it, us, you, them. Obj. of a sentence = my car, the teacher, our boss, Judy’s class, English, China, Lunch, etc. 1-Simple Present and Present Continuous have the same time expressions or Modifiers of time = every day, every week, every weekend, etc. Adverbs = always, usually, regularly, etc. / once per week, currently, today, these days, at the moment, nowadays, at this time, now, right now, etc. S + be + being + Past Participle A: The teacher teaches English today/currently/every day. P: English is being taught by the teacher currently. A: Cars are polluting the air today. P: Today, the air is being polluted by cars. A: I have English classes every day. P: English classes are being given/taught/imparted by me every day. 2-Present perfect: Indefinite (No) time = since, for, earlier, later, recently, lately, for a while, already, yet, never, ever, etc. S + has/have + been + Past Participle A: Traffic has damaged the streets lately. P: Lately, the streets have been damaged by traffic. A: Julie has gone to Paris recently. P: Paris has been visited by Julie recently. Choose which verb applies best: -Children (are asking/ask/ have been asking/have asked) for new cell phones at a younger and younger age. Choose if it is Active or Passive: -The children _________ (wait) for their mom to call before bed time. ----------------------Future----------------------- 3a- Will/Won’t (Adv.) be + Past Participle = less than 50% Adv.= Maybe/Perhaps, probably, possibly, I’m not sure/certain, etc. S V Ph. C=Obj. MT A: I will clean the house on Sunday. P: The house will be cleaned by me on Sunday. 3b- “Be + going to + be +Past Participle” = 95% certain/sure Breakfast Adv.= definitely, absolutely, for sure, most emphatically, etc. A: I am definitely going to have breakfast after class. P: Breakfast is definitely going to be eaten by me after class. --------------------------------------------- Connectors that give a reason: Agent = By + people at+ a place, or a place of business because of + Noun/N. Ph./Gerund due to through as a result of / as a consequence of --------------------MOLDIFIERS------------------------------- Modifiers: Time = when? / Place = where? / Manner = why? Modifiers are Movable. If at the beginning, use a comma but not at the end. Modifiers modify all the sentence. S V. Ph. C=Obj.= Noun/N. Ph. MT A: Overpopulation is killing our forests in 1990 P: In 1990, our forests are being killed by overpopulation in 1990. A: In Ecuador, in 2020, people had needed to be in lockdown. Actually = In fact, In reality, Actually, I go out every Friday. The Adv. goes before the Main Verb I go out every Friday, actually// I actually go out every Friday. She is actually tired. Be goes after is, are, etc. Actually I study a major. = WRONG =because it is referring to time.
