THE ASEAN UNIVERSITY NETWORK
It is clear that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, established in 1967, has achieved
remarkable progress in strengthening the ties and promoting cooperation among countries in Southeast Asia,
especially in terms of cultural, economic, and social collaborations. However, it was not until the Fourth ASEAN
Summit in 1992 that cooperation in the fields of higher education and human resource development became the
point of attention of the ASEAN leaders.
The idea was later developed into the ASEAN University Network (AUN). The network was founded in
November 1995 with the original number of 13 universities in ASEAN member countries. After the enlargement of
ASEAN by the ASEAN Charter in 1997 and 1999, the AUN membership increased to 20 member universities,
with the addition of two universities from Myanmar, three from Laos, Malaysia, and Cambodia, and two from
Indonesia.
The main objective of the AUN is to strengthen the existing network of cooperation among universities in
ASEAN by promoting collaborative studies and research programmes. Furthermore, the AUN attempts to promote
cooperation and solidarity among scientists and scholars in the region and to develop academic and professional
human resources as well as to spread scientific knowledge and information among the universities in the region.

Write a paragraph (150 – 180 words) about ways to reduce your carbon footprint. Use the suggested
ideas :
- Use public transport
- Use energy-efficient appliances in our homes
- Use reusable shopping bags
- ….

Carbon footprint is one of the main contributors to global warming. As mentioned in the media,
members of the public are widely advised to reduce their carbon footprint and the specific steps to
cut it down can be followed easily.
First, carbon dioxide is largely emitted from fossil fuel combustion in transportation, so people can
shift away from petro used cars to eco-friendly vehicles running on electricity or clean ethanol.
Driving less is another way to lessen a significant amount of exhaust fumes. It’s encouraged to ride
electric bikes to work for short distances and take a train or a bus for long journeys. Second,
lowering energy waste at home can make a big difference. Considering household appliances like
lights or TVs, when they are not in use, homeowners should switch off them and better to remove
their plugs from the sockets to save more energy. According to a report, homeowners can save
between $100 and $200 each year by doing so. In addition, it’s wasteful to set your fridge and
freezer temperatures lower than necessary, staying between 35° and 38°F to keep fresh food and 0
degrees for freezers. Last but not least, about 268 million tons of trash a year is produced by the
U.S. Reducing energy consumption by recycling, therefore, can help slash greenhouse gas emissions
substantially. Besides, shoppers should take reusable bags or canvas to the stores and avoid single-
use containers.
In short, through these simple tips and concerted efforts, this environmental issue is no longer
pressing.

According to the passage, why should people choose to use more green vehicles?
To contribute to the reduction in exhaust fumes.
To help reduce traffic congestion in the rush hour.
To lower the cost of energy.
To ensure their safety when travelling for long distances.

What is the passage mainly about?

Hello, everybody. Today I'd like to talk about one of the ASEAN sports activities.
ASG stands for ASIAN School Games. This event is organised every year by an ASEAN member state. The
organisation that supports the ASG is the ASEAN School Sports Council (ASSC). ASSC promotes sports
activities for school students in ASEAN member states.
The ASG aims to establish and strengthen friendship among ASEAN students. When participating in ASG
sports events and cultural exchanges, the ASEAN youth have a chance to learn more about the culture and
history of ASEAN and its member states. They also share information and experience, which promotes
solidarity and mutual understanding among young people.
The first ASG took place in 2009 in Thailand. Thailand finished on top of the medal table with 72 gold
medals. Viet Nam was second with 18 gold medals. The second ASG was organised in 2010 in Malaysia.
Malaysia was first with 45 gold medals, followed by Thailand with 32. Singapore hosted the third ASG in
2011. Thailand won the Games with 29 gold medals. Singapore was second with 26. The fourth ASG was held
in 2012 in Indonesia. Thailand dominated the Games again and won 38 gold medals. Indonesia was second
with 33 gold medals.
The fifth ASG took place in Viet Nam in 2013. The host dominated the Games and finished on top of the
medal table with 50 gold medals. Malaysia was second with 25. None of the teams went home empty-
handed.
I have more detailed information about each ASG. Just come and talk to me if you aril interested.
