A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in English 7
I. Objectives At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
a. recall significant details about the material viewed/read;
b. identify the theme of the given story; and
c. relate the learning to real life experiences.
II. Subject Topic: Identifying the Theme of a Story through the selection
Matter “Waywaya” by F. Sionil Jose
References: English 7 SLM - Quarter 3 Module 4, pp. 4-6
III. Materials Laptop, Speakers, TV, Anchor Chart, SWBST Chart
IV. A. Review
Procedure Activity: Recall the elements of a story by arranging the
jumbled letters.

B. Motivation
1. Author’s Background:
 Briefly introduce the author’s background.
 Explain the meaning of the iloko word “waywaya”
 Introduce the setting of the story

2. Literary Circle: Read the plot summary of the story


“Waywaya” by F. Sionil Jose with your group and
complete the SWBST Chart.
Each group will be given a chart to complete and to
be presented in class.
Somebody: Who was the main character?
Wanted: What did the character want?
But: What was the problem?
So: How did the character solve the problem?
Then: What was the ending of the story?

* Each group will post their work on the board.

After the presentation, ask:


What lesson did you learn from the story?

*The teacher, together with the students, will


discover the meaning of THEME and how to identify
it in a story.

C. Lesson Proper:
Theme is the central, underlying, and controlling
idea or insight of a work of literature.

 the BIG idea
 usually NOT stated
Common theme topics example:
 bravery
 friendship
 patience

How to identify the theme:


“A story is organic” ---which means that every part of
the story plays an important part to the whole. Each
part contributes to the other, from the title itself to the
development of the story.
Title–what is the significance of the title to the story? Why do
you think it is entitled that way?
Plot–is there any meaning on how the plot was laid in the
story?
Setting–how does the setting help in the progress of the
story?
Character–what are the personalities of the characters?
*Note: Pay attention if there are exchange of dialogues
between characters.
Conflict–what type of problem is faced by the character?

*The teacher briefly explains how theme is different


from moral.

*The teacher, together with the students, will now


determine the theme of the story read.

Answers may be:


Change, Respect, Love, Acceptance, etc.
D. Generalization
 The teacher shows the Anchor Chart on Theme

E. Enrichment Activity
1. Practice
Watch a short story then identify its theme. Use the
SWBST chart as a guide.

2. Group Activity
Using the same chart, determine the theme of the
short story entitled “The Goose with a Golden Egg”.
Present it in class.
V. Agreement Identify the theme of the short story “The Crow” using the
SWBST chart. Write your answer on a short bond paper.
