Propose for Voyage Data Recorder systems

… the purpose of a voyage data recorder (VDR)

is to maintain a storage in a secure and
retrievable form, of information concerning the
position, movement, physical status, command
and control […]
Information contained in a VDR should be made
available to both the Administration and the
ship owner …

Extraction: MSC 333(90) 1 Purpose [adopted on 22 May 2012]

Voyage Data Recorder – MSC.333(90)

VDR’s must have three different storages

 Diving capsule with minimum 48 h of latest data

Some Flag States request float free capsule instead of
Diving capsule

 Additional float free capsule with minimum 48 h of

latest data

 Long Term Recording with 30 days of latest data

Additional important changes in MSC..333(90)

VDR need to support Ethernet Multicast acc. to

IEC 61162‐450

Operators Performance Test must be available for

interface check by crew

VDR need to interface to Bridge Alarm Monitoring

System (BAMS) acc. IMO A.1021(26)/3 & IEC
61996‐1 Ed.2/3.1

This means VDR is not allowed to give acoustical

alarm by VDR equipment

VDR emergency backup is not required anymore.

However recommend by INTERSCHALT.

Audio requirements for S‐VDR & VDR

Inside and Outdoor microphones must not be mixed in same recording channel!
This is defined by INTERSCHALT policy for A.163(78) and A.863(20) and required
for VDR systems installed acc. MSC.333(90)

19/02/16
‐ 30 ‐
Audio requirements for S‐VDR & VDR

Connection of mainly used VHF to the VDR

If you have an old VHF you may have TX/RX

audio signals separate, connect RX to the
VDR and ensure that the spoken word (TX)
is covered by an VDR microphone clearly.

19/02/16
‐ 31 ‐
Sensor requirements for S‐VDR & VDR

Sensor data are available as:

serial (NMEA) acc. to IEC 61162

analogue (voltage / current)

digital (NC/NO contacts) inputs

The data must be received by it’s source

directly as per INTERSCHALT policy.
