Project description: This project is a collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute
(KEMRI), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), other collaborators and donors
whose remit is to conduct research in Malaria, HIV, Tuberculosis and other diseases. The project has a
vacancy in the CHAMPS Study, under the Family Health Research Unit.
Position: Laboratory Analyst J/G KMR6 1 position
Location: Kisumu/Siaya
Reporting to: PI
Job Summary: The Laboratory Analyst position requires the staff to coordinate biological specimen
collection and preservation including placental tissues obtained during home deliveries, biological sample
chain of custody management and quality control related procedures.
Qualifications required
• Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences (Biology, Molecular Biology and Microbiology) from a
recognized institution
• Good command of written and spoken English, Kiswahili and Dholuo
• Minimum of 1-year experience in biomedical research
• Proficiency in the use of computers and use electronic case report form (eCRF) for data collection
Responsibilities and tasks
• Prepare Laboratory reagent e.g. buffers for placenta preservation
• Receive/collect and record specimens according to applicable protocols and standard operating
procedures (SOPs)
• Perform placental tissue grossing
• Process placenta tissues for Haematoxylin and Eosin (H & E) staining
• Coordinate laboratory related supplies and stock monitoring in the study health facilities
• Train community interviewers and community health volunteers on biosafety and biosecurity
guidelines
• Develop field/laboratory SOPs
Terms of Employment: This is a one (1) year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service with
probation period in the first 3 months.
Remuneration: The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales.
