The Effects of Blended Learning to IBHM students in JCFC from 2022 to 2026

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Tradition is an important part of one's life; it influences our daily decisions

and beliefs. People in some parts of the Philippines are still so conservative that they

believe girls should dress and act in ways that they have traditionally advocated.

Tradition includes not only clothing, food, character, and belief, but also the approach

to teaching and learning methods. Tradition can be continuous, but it can also change

as a result of many factors. It is common in various countries to have online classes

and home schooling. People in the Philippines, on the other hand, have traditionally

attended school on campuses, also known as face-to-face classes.

There are things that can affect ones belief or tradition, one of these is

fortuitous events experienced by people. Back in 2020 people had experiences they

didn’t expect to have. People were forced to stay at home due to the drastic spread of

a virus named Corona. Change is inevitable because of Pandemic; It affected

countries all over the world. People were mandated to wear face masks and face

shield outside their homes. Furthermore, people were told to disinfect many times a

day to avoid being exposed to the virus. People suffered from the sudden change; that

people got depressed and even lose their job. In addition, the real struggle with this

pandemic is that many people have lost their love ones and not being able to do the

things people are used to. For example, being able to communicate freely without

1

barriers such as face masks and being able to spend quality time with friends and

family with no worry of getting sick or spreading the virus.

Rohana Syamsuddin, an Instructor at Universitas Negeri Makassar, says

according to her experience, she used a variety of teaching methods to attract students'

attention and interest, such as using media and methods that are appropriate for the

student's needs. Using a cooperative learning method increases students' attention and

interest because they learn together, share ideas, and solve problems while having fun

with their classmates. (May 30, 2021)

In education, people consider not only the students' learning capacity, but also

the teachers' teaching methods. There are numerous arguments that can be made that if

a student's learning capacity is low, even if the teacher's teaching method is excellent,

nothing will change. However, if the teachers' or professors' teaching methods are

poor, even if the students' learning capacity is high, nothing will change. Therefore,

the sudden change of teaching method can have a huge impact to everyone.

JCFC being one of the school existing for almost 30 years in Pampanga. It

shows that this school should be more on traditional teaching method or face-to-face

classes but due to unexpected events they have adapted to change that they now offer

blended learning for the safety of the students and their employees. When inside the

school premises, The school or administration gave students schedules that won’t

crowd the campus and see to it that students follow protocols for their safe

environment. When they are in online class, the professors really provide modules,

videos and activities to make sure that the students will be learning.

Jose C Feliciano College (JCFC) or also known as Jose C. Feliciano College

Foundation is located in Dau, Mabalacat, Pampanga. It started out in 1994 and is

named after a Pampanga Native and lawyer, Atty. Manuel M. Feliciano. JCFC caters

students from elementary, Junior High school, Senior High School and College. The

researchers were motivated to created a study to know The effects of blended learning

to IBHM students because aside from the fact that it is timely, the researchers wanted

to figure out the insights of the students about the different learning approach and

figure out whether blended learning can continuously be offered by the school in the

upcoming years.

1.2 CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The primary aim of this study is to know the effects of blended learning to

IBHM students. How they adapt to this new learning framework and how it affects

their learning process.

We started by gathering our data, using survey questionnaires. The researchers

choose their respondents, by department under the IBHM program, taking into

consideration their sex and courses.

The gathered data was then tabulated and analyzed. The following are the

procedures we've undertaken: Statistical analysis of data and Presentation of findings.

Finally, the effects of blended learning on IBHM students were determined.

Based on the result of our study, we therefore conclude that, most of the IBHM

students of JCFC, prepare to continue blended learning program rather than the full

face to face classes.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter offers the gathered facts and related portions of literature from

one-of-a-kind reading substances which can be related to the venture. Different

statistics were gathered through articles, books, journals and thesis with a view to or

may also support the concept of the proposed assignment and may help the

researchers to create ideas and ideas for the project.

According to Cruz, (2015). A private school advocacy group has asked the

Department of Education (Dep Ed) to expand the blended learning system. The

Department of Education mandated that all public and private schools switch to in-

person classes by November 2. However, Bantay Konsyumer, Kalsada, Kuryente

(BK3) Secretary General Patrick "Pet" Climaco stated that the rise in Covid-19 cases

and the lack of school guarantees that students are fully protected from infection

remain a source of concern for parents.

As study of Lin et Al, (2019).With improvements in information and

communication technologies, blended learning has emerged as a useful strategy for

showcasing the effects of disciplines and addressing the variety of the student body.

Business school professors have acquired an awareness of evolving design

methodologies and chosen suitable designs for blended courses. This study uses team-

based learning and blended learning strategies to complement a management course.

197 undergraduate business students from two Taiwanese institutions participated in

this study. Survey questions were used to collect their opinions of the course. The

8

linkages between learners' perceived enjoyment, information sharing, team

effectiveness, and perceived individual learning have been identified through further

quantitative study. In using this approach to business education, this study details the

educational advantages, pedagogical consequences, and research constraints.

According to Nisreen Saleh Khader, (2016). The study aimed at identifying

the effectiveness of blended learning in improving students' achievement in the third

grade's science in the traditional method. The study sample consisted of male and

female students, who were divided into two groups: experimental and control. The

experimental group studied the units and changes of the material and the parts and

functions of the plants for the third grade through using the blended learning while the

control group studied the same units in the traditional method. An achievement test

was developed in the mentioned units of the science course to measure the

achievement, which had a sufficient validity and reliability.

This study uses team-

quantitative study. In using this approach to business education, this study details the

educational advantages, pedagogical consequences, and research constraints.

According to Ruth Boelens (2917), The design of blended learning

environments brings with it four key challenges: incorporating flexibility, stimulating

interaction, facilitating students' learning processes, and fostering an affective

learning climate. Seeing that attempts to resolve these challenges are fragmented

across the literature, a systematic review was performed. The results show that few

studies offer learners control over the realization of the blend. Social interaction is

generally stimulated through introductory face-to-face meetings, while

personalization and monitoring of students’ learning progress is commonly organized

through online instructional activities. Finally, little attention is paid to instructional

activities that foster an affective learning climate.

As stated by de Brito Lima, Felipe (2022), Key principles and resources for

blended learning practices are addressed in the theoretical framework, along with their

relationships with learning pathways, student performance and ICT skills. Behaviors

and uses of resources identified in screen recordings of learners' responses to tasks

were contrasted among groups, learning scenarios and with regard to students’

performance scores and ICT skills. Nonparametric tests pointed to significant

differences between groups in terms of ICT skills and to no significant differences

regarding performance. There were predominantly no significant differences within

observed uses of resources and pathways in terms of associated performance or ICT

scores. Differences between patterns of use and pathways observed in each lesson are

10
The Effects of Blended Learning to IBHM students in JCFC from 2022 to 2026

analyzed. Data suggests pedagogical practices learners were previously exposed to

impacted their engagement, and uses of different resources were interrelated in a

systemic perspective.

In the manner of Ferlazzo, Larry (2020), Many schools will begin this year in

a hybrid situation, with students attending a physical school part time and spending

the remaining hours in remote asynchronous instruction. Other districts, like ours, will

begin the year entirely online, with students spending part of their time in live classes

while working on their own during other parts of the day. Blended learning strives to

provide students the best of both face-to-face and online learning experiences.

Blended classrooms include face-to-face instruction techniques such as direct

instruction or lecture, group discussions, and small-group work while also using

technology to provide in-class online learning that students can do at home provided

they have access to necessary technology.

According to the book of Vimbi Petrus Mahlangu (2017), The second

challenge comes from new learning opportunities that technology now affords.

Constructivism, interpretivism, and computing technology, separately and often

together, have redesigned the conception of the challenges and opportunities of

learning, and brought about new learning possibilities for almost all teaching and

learning situations, including traditional classroom teaching, distance learning, and

self-learning. Computer-supported learning environments could have good problems

that will stimulate students to explore and reflect on their knowledge construction.

Students who cannot afford higher education are discouraged from seeking or

completing a degree. Distance learning-based programs could increase access for

11
The Effects of Blended Learning to IBHM students in JCFC from 2022 to 2026

students to higher education, whereas open and distance-learning programs may be

difficult to implement in the laboratory sciences, but they have real potential to

maximize the use of technology.

According to Fernan Peniero Tupas and Marilyn Linas-Laguda (2020), The

use of BL in education helps students engage positively in all activities and increased

behavior towards learning, and empowered to become leaders, coaches, and mentors

to fellow students. Teachers, as necessary instruments for effective implementation of

BL, the conduct of professional development is vital. In the country, DepEd proposed

to use online learning, modular approach, radio-television methods, face-to-face, and

para-teachers for blended learning. But the lack of facilities like gadgets or computer

sets, and connectivity in the Philippines is a unique challenge to DepEd.

As stated by Melchor Balolong (2022), Common challenges posed with the

use blended learning modality when unidentified and unacted can cause difficulty in

learning or even failure in delivery of lessons. This study investigates the challenges

of blended learning which consists of modular and online distance learning.

Phenomenological inquiry was used to gather data on 15 participants composed of

teachers, parents and learners of Kisante National High School who were undergoing

blended learning. Results revealed that participants experienced constant distraction

from social media and household chores, low retention, poor mobile data service, less

effective SLM distribution and retrieval system, high internet cost, incapability to

attend online classes, scarce technical resources and anxieties.

Based on the article from Ana Verde and Jose Manuel Valero (2019), The

effects of the pandemic have affected and continue to affect education methods every

12
The Effects of Blended Learning to IBHM students in JCFC from 2022 to 2026

day. The education methods are not immune to the pandemic periods we are facing,

so teachers must know how to adapt their methods in such a way that teaching, and its

quality, is not negatively affected. This study provides an overview of different types

of teaching methodology before, during, and after the coronavirus disease 2019

(COVID-19) pandemic. This study describes the different types of teaching (e.g.,

presence learning, blended learning, and distance education) used in two Spanish

Universities (i.e., one private and one public) during the pandemic.

A study of Kintu et al, (2017) he effectiveness of a blended learning

environment is investigated in this paper by examining the relationship between

student characteristics/background, design features, and learning outcomes. It seeks to

identify the significant predictors of blended learning effectiveness, with student

characteristics/background and design features serving as independent variables and

learning outcomes serving as dependent variables.

According to research, technology is a useful supplement to the educational

system. One such study, conducted by Sean M. Corcoran, Ed. D, focuses on the

effects of tablet apps on first-grade students' reading instruction. Students who used

tablet apps performed better than those who did not. According to Corcoran's

findings, "the use of tablet apps during reading instruction had a statistically

significant impact on student achievement”.

As stated by Bung Hatta,(2018) Additionally, learning is a process that

involves both technology and human interaction. Interaction between learning

materials, teachers, and students. Learning can also be more than that. Carried out in

13
The Effects of Blended Learning to IBHM students in JCFC from 2022 to 2026

an online setting. E-learning has a number of benefits, however there are also. There

are various drawbacks to the online learning environment. Learning cannot be

replaced by it in the classroom. The social interaction required for face-to-face

learning is provided by learning. In other words, face-to-face interactions are crucial

and shouldn't be neglected. behind academically

In study of Verde & Valero, (2001)The pandemic's impacts have had an

impact and still do today on educational practices. Teachers must be able to modify

their teaching strategies so that teaching and its quality are not compromised by the

epidemic periods we are currently experiencing. An overview of several teaching

methodologies used before, during, and after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-

19) pandemic is given in this article. This study analyzes the various teaching

methods employed during the pandemic in two Spanish universities (one private and

one public), such as presence learning, blended learning, and distant education.

As a result of scientific and technological developments reflection of Barış

Çiftçi, (2020) Improvements on education science moved from teacher centred to

student and learning centered system. Learning concept is not only seen a at schools

and some learning centers but in all areas and places of life. The aim of this study is to

search the achievement and persistency of blended learning method at social studies

lesson. With the empirical method used at research, the impact of independent

variable examined on experimental group is blended learning method. The

independent variable used at control group is face to face learning method.

14
The Effects of Blended Learning to IBHM students in JCFC from 2022 to 2026

Studied by Nilesh Gutte (2021), The education industry was one of the worst

hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, with institutions scrambling to find solutions to keep

their doors open. In these times of need, online learning tools emerged as a boon. In

the last two years, investments in EdTech tools, especially in the online education

segment, have skyrocketed, resulting in significant technological improvements.

Stated by Christine V. Redoblo (2015), The Blended Learning adaptation

further added to the teaching and learning experience in the classroom. The study

investigated the factors on the use of ICT in terms of Computer usage, Internet usage,

Multimedia usage and Mobile usage in Blended Learning Approach among the

faculty. It analyzed the SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) of

blended learning for a Proposed 5-year Instructional Design Strategic Plan. The study

used quantitative research design by the use of the constructed questionnaire and

qualitative through the conducted focus group discussions within the four campuses

of CHMSC. The study revealed that CHMSC faculty exhibited low extent of use of

blended learning.

Based on the studies of University of the Cordilleras students (2020), The

COVID-19 pandemic has caused a drastic shift from traditional to online distance

education which resulted in many difficulties to our learning delivery modes. The

purpose of this study is to find out what are the challenges of primary pupils in

Educare College, Inc. in Online Distance Learning modality. The researchers employ

the use of phenomenological approach and thematic analysis which include face-to-

face and online interviews, watching recorded Zoom classes and observations were

applied to synthesize and identify the challenges during online classes. Physical and

15
The Effects of Blended Learning to IBHM students in JCFC from 2022 to 2026

digital distractions, technological and technical difficulties, institutional and academic

issues, and personal and psychological barriers are the challenges that the pupils

encounter during online classes.

According to Abel V. Alvarez Jr. (2020) a Filipino researcher, Blended

learning in the Philippines is still considered new and young. However, this growing

demand for blended learning possesses problems and challenges that are noteworthy

to investigate, specifically in emerging higher education institutions, which hinder

effective and efficient delivery of teaching and learning. This paper reflects different

lenses of experiences encountered by five purposively selected facilitators teaching

National Service Training Program (NSTP) in a certain university in Manila,

Philippines. A qualitative case study research method was employed to interview the

participants.

From the studies of Lorico DS, Lapitan jr. And Joey mark Diaz (2021), The

shift to distance teaching and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic brought about

a real challenge for both instructors and students. To face these difficulties in teaching

undergraduate Chemistry courses at the University of Santo Tomas, a blended

learning strategy in the context of teaching and learning of Physical Chemistry 1 and

Analytical Chemistry for Chemical Engineering students were employed. Here, we

present an online strategy that facilitated the transition from traditional face-to-face

learning to full online instruction. This is a five-component blended learning strategy

referred to as Discover, Learn, Practice, Collaborate and Assess (DLPCA). In

DLPCA, the asynchronous part of the teaching was achieved through broadcast of

16

pre-recorded lecture videos on YouTube to allow students to study and progress with

learning at their own pace.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers first composed the survey questionnaire and had it

checked by their adviser and their panel for their approval. Suggestions were

considered and incorporate. Upon the approval, they sought the approval of

the Dean of the department by securing a request of letter approved by the

research- adviser to conduct this study. The researcher requested from the

adviser for a copy of the master list of IBHM and distributed the questionnaire.

The questionnaire was administered through google form to the 150

IBHM students at Jose C. Feliciano College Foundation academic year 2022-

2023.

Results were place in tabular forms to facilitate discussion. Based on the

result, the researchers conceptualized some ways that can be helpful in

implementing the blended learning to the students in time of pandemic.
