Section F: Comprehension MCQ (5 x 2 marks = 10 marks)
Read the passage carefully. Then, choose the letter of the correct and most
suitable answer.

Why Do some Animals Have Armour?

1 Why do some animals have shells? The answer is for protection.

Many sea animals are at the risk of being eaten by larger animals so
they are protected by a hard shell. Some of these animals are snails,
scallops, crabs and lobsters. For a predator to eat the scallop, it would
have to either break its shell or force it open. 5

2 Crabs and lobsters have a different kind of armour. Their entire

bodies are covered with a jointed skeleton which can move about.
This allows crabs and lobsters to attack and defend themselves with
strong pincers.
3 Even insects have their own armour. It is made of a much lighter 10
material than crab or scallop shells. It allows the insects to fly.
However, some insects, like beetles, still seem to have problems
flying.
4 Animals with armour often face problems when they are growing.
As their shells do not grow with them, they must grow in stages. Just 15
before the new „skin‟ is fully hardened, the old armour is removed.
5 There are some disadvantages to having armour as well. Animals
with this form of protection are usually slow-moving but they are also
some of the longest living animals. One example is a tortoise which
lived up to 152 years. 20
