Parking Shed Modification Plan
Introduction:
The Parking shed, which is located near the Employees residential area, is to be moved from
its current location to the new location near the Bridge. The Old shed is to be dismantled and
moved to the new Place, along with the old shed new shed is to be constructed. The material
of old shed should be used along with purchased material for the construction of the new shed.
During the design of the new shed following criteria were kept under consideration:
1. The material from the old shed should be used.
2. The new material should be purchased in accordance to the old material.
3. The structure should be strong enough to bear the dead load of the roof.
Keeping the above criteria in view following design consideration were made:
1. The total size of the new shed divided into three portions:
a. 6.1 m X 12.20 m
b. 6.1 m X 18.3 m
c. The area under the bridge.
2. The New shed is designed in the L-Shape Structure.
3. The total size capacity of the shed is for 14 Vehicles and 9 bikes (The bikes will have
separate space).
To check the load capacity following design steps were carried out:
1. The total dead load of the roof and the whole structure was calculated.
2. For proposed sheet is GI Roof Sheet (Gauge 18).
3. The trusses were incorporated for the structure to increase the load bearing capacity of
the structure.
4. For the frame 40 mm square pipes were used in internal Beams and Truss Structure.
5. The Trusses for the roof structure were incorporated form Pillar to Pillar in Both
Horizontal and Vertical Direction.
6. So, The Structure will have Seven 6.1 m Truss and Four 9.1 m Truss.
7. Total of 10 columns of 100 mm Sq. Pipes are used to support the column.
8. The Design analysis was carried out for the total Dead loads, Column’s Buckling and
Wind Load capacity.
9. The structure stability was also reconfirmed using SKYCIV software.
10. The Drawing were made in AutoCAD.
Dead Load Calculations and Structural Stability:

Dead Load of the Roof:

To find the dead load first calculate the whole load of the roof due to the Sheets, Trusses and
Beams.
Sheet Self Load:
The sheet used for the roof has the following specifications:
1. GI Sheet 26 gauge
2. Thickness = 0.5 mm
3. Mass = 3.925 kg/m2
Load of the Sheet = 3.95*9.81 N/m2 = 38.5 N/m2
Total area of roof = (6.1 * 12.2) + (6.1 * (24.4 – 6.1))
= 186.05 m^2
Mass of roof = Mass of sheet * total Area = 3.925 * 186.05
= 730.24 Kg
Total Load Due to sheets = (730.24*9.81) = = 7163.72 N

Load due to Roof Internal Beams:

Since all the Beams used are of 40 mm square pipes. So, the Pipes used have the following
specifications:
1. MS Pipe 18 gauge
2. Thickness = 1.2 mm
3. Outer Dimensions = 1.5” * 1.5” = 40 mm * 40 mm
4. Mild Steel Density = 7850 kg/m3
5. Mass per Unit Length = 0.94 Kg/m
To calculate the total load due to the load of the Beams calculate the total length of the pipe
used and then multiply it with the mass per unit length to get the load due to the Beams.
So, the total length of the Beams = (6 * 6.1 + 12.2 + 24.4) = 73.2 m
Mass of the Beams = 73.2 m * 0.94 Kg/m = 68.8 Kg
Load of the Beams = 68.8*9.81 N = 675 N
Dead Load of the Trusses:
There are two trusses used with the dimensions of 6.1 m length and 9.1 m Length and each
made of 40 mm Pipes.

For 6.1 m Truss:

Total Pipe Used in Each Truss = (3*0.407) + (2*6.1) + 2* Sq. root (3.048^2+0.407^2)
= 19.57 m
Mass per unit Length of the 40 mm Pipe = 0.94 Kg/m
So,
Total Mass of 1 Truss = 19.57 * 0.94 Kg = 18.396 Kg
Total Self Load of the One 6.1 m Truss = 18.396 * 9.81 N = 180.465 N

For 9.1 m Truss:

Total Pipe Used in Each Truss = (3*0.607) + (2*9.1) + 2* Sq. root (4.55^2+0.607^2)
= 29.20 m
Mass per unit Length of the 40 mm Pipe = 0.94 Kg/m
So,
Total Mass of 1 Truss = 29.20 * 0.94 Kg = 27.45 Kg
Total Self Load of the One 9.1 m Truss = 27.45 * 9.81 N = 269.26 N

Total Load of the Roof:

So, the Total Load of the Roof will be Equal to the Sum of:
a. Load of the Sheets
b. Load of the Internal Beams
c. Load of the Trusses
Since there are Four 9.1 m Trusses and Four 6.1 m Trusses. So, the Total load of the Trusses
will be the Sum of the These all the Trusses.
Total Load = Load of sheets + Load of Beams + Load of the Trusses
= 7163.72 N + 675 N + 4 * 269.26 N + 7 * 180.465 N
= 10179.015 N
Load Bearing Capacity of Trusses and Beams:
After finding the Load of each structure, Each Element is Treated Separately for the Load
Bearing Capacity. The analysis is done by converting the Load of the roof into the line load
beard by Each element.

Truss Analysis:
1. MS Pipe 18 gauge
2. Thickness = 1.2 mm
3. Outer Dimensions = 1.5” * 1.5” = 40 mm * 40 mm
4. Mild Steel Density = 7850 kg/m3
5. Mass per Unit Length = 0.94 Kg/m

Truss Analysis of 6.1 m Truss

Dead load of the Truss over the longer span of L = 6.1 m
The span to depth ratio of trusses ranges from 10 to 25, depending on the intensity of the
applied load. The lower the ratio, the longer are the shear members in the truss and the
larger is the volume occupied by the roof structure.
So,
Depth of the Truss = D/15 = 0.407 m
Total Pipe Used in Each Truss = (3*0.407) + (2*6.1) + 2* Sq. root (3.048^2+0.407^2)
= 19.57 m
Mass per unit Length of the 40 mm Pipe = 0.94 Kg/m
So,
Total Mass of 1 Truss = 19.57 * 0.94 Kg = 18.396 Kg
Total Self Load of the One 6.1 m Truss = 18.396 * 9.81 N = 180.465 N
Line Load Due to the self-weight of Truss = 180.465 / 6.1 = 29.58 N/m
Since the distance between two columns is 6.1 meter so the sheet load will act as a
uniformly distributed load (UDL) on each side so the UDL will be equal to the Load per
unit area multiply by half of the Distance between two Columns.
Line load of the roof = 38.5 N/m2 * 3.048 m
= 117.348 N/m
So,
The total line loads = w = 117.348 + 29.58 = 146.93 N/m
For Axial Load,
Moment = M = (wL^2)/8
= 683.42 Nm.
To check the stability of the Truss the axial load should not exceed from Moment divided
by the depth of the Truss
Axial Load = M/D = 683.42/0.407 N = 1679.16 N
For the deflection safety we assume a condition of Deflection should not exceed “L/360” (as
per international building Code ICB-2000). And then find the value of “I required”. After
finding the value “I required”, we will compare this value with the “I actual” of the truss.

So, for I required

I = (5*w*L^4) / (384 * E * L/360)
I required = 7.44 * 10^-7 m^4
So, for I actual
I = (Area of Chord * D^2) / 2
(Area of is the area of the Cross-Section of Pipe used)
I = ((40 * 10^-3) ^2 * 0.407 ^ 2) / 2
I = 3.79 * 10 ^ -5 m^4
Since,
I actual > I required, so design is stable under given load conditions.

Truss Analysis of 9.1 m Truss

Total Pipe Used in Each Truss = (3*0.607) + (2*9.1) + 2* Sq. root (4.55^2+0.607^2)
= 29.20 m
Mass per unit Length of the 40 mm Pipe = 0.94 Kg/m
So,
Total Mass of 1 Truss = 29.20 * 0.94 Kg = 27.45 Kg
Total Self Load of the One 9.1 m Truss = 27.45 * 9.81 N = 269.26 N

Line Load Due to the self-weight of Truss = 269.26/9.1 = 29.59 N/m

Line load of the roof = 38.5 N/m2 * 3.048 m
= 117.348 N/m
So,
The total line loads = w = 117.348 + 29.59 = 146.94 N/m
For Axial Load,
Moment = M = (wL^2)/8
= 1520.99 Nm.
To check the stability of the Truss the axial load should not exceed from Moment divided
by the depth of the Truss
Axial Load = M/D = 1528.12/0.813 N = 2505.75 N
For the deflection safety we assume a condition of Deflection should not exceed “l/360”
(as per international building Code ICB-2000). And then find the value of “I required”.
After finding the value “I required”, we will compare this value with the “I actual” of the
truss.
So, for I required
I = (5*w*L^4) / (384 * E * L/360)
I required = 2.47 * 10^-6 m^4
So, for I actual
I = (Area of Chord * D^2) / 2
I = ((40 * 10^-3) ^2 * 0.607 ^ 2) / 2
I = 5.65 * 10 ^ -5 m^4
Since,
I actual > I required, so design is stable under given load conditions.

The Truss members were also Checked using SKYCIV software so the stress report of the
SKYCIV is given as follows:
Beam Deflection of Internal Beam
Beam Specification for Internal Beam
1. MS Pipe 18 gauge
2. Thickness = 1.2 mm
3. Outer Dimensions = 1.5” * 1.5” = 40 mm * 40 mm
4. Mild Steel Density = 7850 kg/m3
5. Mass per Unit Length = 0.94 Kg/m
Load of the Beam =0.94 * 9.81 N/m
Load of the Beam = 9.212 N/m
Since Beams are 3.408m apart,
So, line load of Roof on Internal Beams if 1.5’’ * 1.5” pipe is used = 38.5 * 3.048 N/m =
117.348 N/m
So total Load on Internal Beam will be = w = 117.348 + 9.212 N/m
w =126.56 N/m
I = (4.911 * 10^-8) m4 Formula: (I=BH^3/12)
5𝑤𝐿4
Deflection =
384𝐸𝐼

Deflection = 4.83 mm
Design Safety factor = 1.3
Deflection with safety factor = 6.279 mm
Design Allowed Deflection for Dead Load = L/360 = (3.408 * 10^3)/ 360 = 9.5 mm
(International building Code ICB-2000)
6.279 mm < 9.5 mm (Within limits)
Column Buckling Calculations:
Total Number of Columns = 10
Total Load of the Roof along with the trusses and beams = 10,179.015 N
Load on Each Column = 10,179.015 N / 10 = 1,017.9 N

From classic elastic column buckling theory the Euler buckling load is the compressive axial
force necessary to cause lateral instability of a vertical column. The formula for the Euler
buckling load is:
𝜋 2 𝐸𝐼
𝑓𝑐 = − 2
𝐿
Where:
E is Young's modulus,
I is the moment of inertia of the column cross-section,
L is column length.

Figure 10.3. The effect of pressure on the effective force and buckling.

For 100 mm Column

E = 210 * 10^9 N/m^2 Modulus of elasticity
I = (100^4-96^4)/12 = 8.33 * 10^-6 m^4 Formula: (I= BH^3/12)
Critical Load = F = 3.142^2 * (E * I)/L^2 (Euler’s Equation for Buckling)
F = 1288.84 kN
For 75 mm Column
E = 210 * 10^9 N/m^2
I = (72^4 - 68^4)/12 = 4.577 * 10^-7 m^4
Critical Load = F = 3.142^2 * (E * I)/L^2 (Euler’s Equation for
Buckling)
F = 70.863 kN
For 50 mm Column
E = 210 * 10^9 N/m^2
I = (50^4 - 46^4)/12 = 1.477 * 10^-7 m^4
Critical Load = F = 3.142^2 * (E * I)/L^2 (Euler’s Equation for
Buckling)
F = 22.853 kN

Wind load calculation

1
𝐹 = 2 𝜌𝑣 2 𝐴 (A)

Air Density = 1.225 kg/m3

Wind Velocity = 27.8 m/s
Now, calculate the effective area and plug it into the wind load formula:
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑒𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 = 𝐴 × 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃

𝜃 = 0.05
Area of Sheet = 3.66 × 0.9 = 3.294
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑒𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 = 3.294 × cos (0.05)

𝑨𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒆𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 = 𝟑. 𝟐𝟗𝟑

Putting values in eq. A

𝐹 = 0.5 × 1.225 × 27.82 × 3.293
𝐹 = 1558.7893𝑁
𝐹 = 1.558 𝑘𝑁
Therefore,
W wind = 1.558/ 3.293 = 0.473 kN/m2
W wind = 0.8 𝑘𝑁⁄𝑚2 (Max. wind speed = 100 km/h ➔ 27.8 m/s (as per standard))
W wind < W allowable
Observations
The above Calculations are for the dead load of sheet and Internal and External Beams by
Using 40 mm Square Pipe.
The followings are the key take away from these calculations:
1. The Edge Beam which was previously used was 40 mm * 75 mm pipe is replaced
by 40 mm * 40 mm pipe Truss.
2. Due to truss the overall deflection is reduced and the number of Columns is reduced
from 19 to 10.
3. The overall critical load of the roof is very less so there will be no buckling issue.
However, reducing the column size, which 100 mm by 100 mm pipe will compromise
the strength of the whole structure in case of any impact by the vehicle due to any
accident.
