SCIENCE: Develop Questions, Final Exam, 2nd Partial

Unit 5: Lesson #3: Mutations

1. What is mutation? It is any change in the Dna of a gene or
chromosomes

2. How can mutations affect an organism? It can cause a cell

to produce an incorrect protein

3. What will occur if mutation occurs in a sex cell? THe

mutation can be passed to an offspring or affect it

4. What are the two types of mutations? small changes in an

organisms Dna, and chromosome dont seperate correctly

5. When will mutation be harmful and helpful? Mutation is

harmful when it reduces the organisms chances for
survival And helpful when it doesnt

6. What is cancer? IT is a disease which cells grow and divide

uncontrollably

7. List three factors that contributes to determine if a person

gets cancer. High fat diet, substances in the environment
and inherited traits
8.
9. What is a tumor? It is a mass with abnormal cells that
develops when cells divide and grow uncontrollably

10. How is cancer treated? Cancer is treated with surgery

radiation and Chemotherapy

11. What is the relationship between the cell cycle and

cancer? Mutations can disrupt the cell cycle
Unit 5: Lesson 4: Human Inheritance
12. What are the functions of the sex chromosomes? The
sex chromosomes carry genes that determine a person's
sex and traits

13. What are the girl’s sex chromosomes? XX Chromosomes

14. What are the boy’s sex chromosomes? XY Chromosomes

15. Study punnet square and probabilities on figure 3

16. How does sex chromosomes and fertilization relate?

When an egg cell with X chromosome fertilizes the egg
that has two chromosomes the fertilized egg will be a girl

17. Why genes found on X and Y chromosomes often called

Sex-linked genes? Because their alleles are passed to from
parent to child
18. What is colorblindness? It is a sex linked trait

19. What is a carrier? It is a person who has one recessive

allele fro a trait and one dominant allele

Unit 5: Lesson 5: Advances in Genetics

20. What is the different between selective inbreeding and
selective hybridization? Selective inbreeding involves
crossing two individuals that have the same characteristics
And hybridization means crossing two genetically different
individuals

21. What is clone? It is an organism that has the exact same

genes as the organism it is produced from

22. What is genetic engineering? it is when genes from

organisms are transfered into the DNA of another
organism

23. What is gene therapy? introduction of normal genes

into cells in place of missing or defective ones in order to
correct disorders
Unit 6: Lesson #1 & #2
24. How does fossil form?
25. How old are rock layers? THe oldest one at the top the
youngest at the bottom

26. Study apply it on page 206

Unit 7: Lesson #1: What is a plant?
27. What characteristics do all plants share? All are
autotrophs and produce photosynthesis

28. What do plants need to live successfully on land? Water,

nutrients and good soil
Unit 7: Lesson #2: Classifying Plants
29. How do nonvascular plants, seedless plant and seed
plants differ? NonVascular plants lack vascular tissue and
use spores to reproduce. Seedless vascular plants have
tissue and Seed plants have vascular tissues and use
pollen and seeds to reproduce

30. Write two examples of each: nonvascular plants,

seedless plant, and seed plants.
Non vascular: Liveworts Hornworts
Seedles plants: ferns horsetails

31. List and define the two types of vascular tissue.

Phloem: vascular tissue where food moves

Xylem: vascular tissue trough which water moves
