BASIC FACILITATION SKILLS

Facilitation: The process of assisting (never forcing) the learners in their capability to learn and
sustain the eagerness to do so, at the same time dealing and giving up precious learning. The skill
needed by the instructor to allow the learners deal with the ambivalent feelings associated with the
new learning and giving up the previous learning.

Facilitating Skills - help the trainers bridge the gap between the training content and the learners.

Types of Facilitating Skills:

 Listening
 Sensitivity
 Trust
 Attending
 Observing
 Questioning

Guidelines in Improving Facilitation Skills:

1. Face the learners. (participants)


2. Maintain appropriate eye contact.
3. Move towards the learners.
4. Avoid distracting behaviors.
5. Nod affirmatively.
6. Be aware of internal and external distractions.
7. Practice paraphrasing.
8. Practice restating.
9. Use open-ended questions.
10. Ask clear concise questions covering single issue.
11. Ask reasonable questions.
12. Ask challenging questions which provoke thoughts.
13. Use positive reinforcement for correct answers.
14. Acknowledge effort of the respondent in answering questions.
15. Start questions with Ano or Paano.
16. Use encouraging hand gestures.
17. Lean forward when you listen or when you speak.
18. Use natural facial expressions in talking with the learners.
19. Be honest and sincere.

Constant and correct practice and mastery of the subject matter will help a lot.
