"Ways To Reduce Air Pollution"

1.0 Brief Introduction/Rationale

A combination of different gasses such as Nitrogen, Oxygen, Helium, Hydrogen, Argon, etc. is known as air.
Atmospheric motions keep the uniformity of these gasses. Burning waste and fossil fuels, vehicle emissions,
construction and demolition, waste, landfills, and numerous more factors can inhibit the uniformity of the air.
When the levels of these gasses surpass the expected limit, the air gets polluted and this is known as air
pollution. There are so numerous ways that we can examine how to decrease air pollution. Millions of people
die every year because of air pollution. The air we breathe every day has many toxic and hazardous pollutants.
Everyone should be accountable to decrease air pollution.

1. Use of public transport:

Use Public Transportation to Decrease Air Pollution. Facts and figures don’t lie — our transportation
requirements create 30% of all carbon dioxide gas emissions. We can utilize public buses rather of
utilizing private cars or vehicles. Let’s say a bus can carry 40 passengers at once; these 40
passengers can decrease the emissions of 40 private vehicles by utilizing one public vehicle rather.
Numerous public vehicles run on CNG (Compressed Natural Gas). CNG consists of a very big portion
of methane (CH₄). CH₄ burns cleaner than some other fuels, decreasing ash emissions. As a result, it
reduces the number of fine particles in the air.
The introduction of new technology like E-Busses aids in decreasing emissions, and thus, air
pollution. Traffic congestion creates high quantities of soot and carbon monoxide, which contributes to
poor air quality. Using public transportation decreases pollution levels, as well as traffic jams on the
road.

2. Buy Energy Efficient Vehicles Like Electric:

When buying a vehicle, consider fuel-efficient and alternative fuel vehicles. E-vehicles are much more efficient,
and when compared to the price of energy. Charging an e-vehicle is less costly than filling up liquid fuel for
your travel requirements. Utilizing renewable sources of energy can improve utilizing e-vehicles, making them
environmentally helpful.
Since e-vehicles have fewer moving parts than petrol and diesel-burning engines, they require less maintenance.
As a result, the annual price of utilizing an e-car is much lower. Electric automobiles have lower licensing fees
and road taxes than gasoline-powered automobiles.
Petrol and diesel- cars emit toxic air pollutants which add to air pollution levels. The main pollutants created by
gasoline-powered cars include:
 Carbon Monoxide- CO decreases the capability of blood to carry O2 to various body organs. CO exposure
causes lethargy, migraines, disorientation, and nausea. It delays cell growth, unnaturally small new foliage,
an unusual withering of the greenery, and over-developed tissues in plants. Animal CO poisoning symptoms
include cognitive injury, trouble with breathing, and sudden death.
 Nitrogen Oxides- NO irritate the membrane in the mucous. NO in high doses causes lung irritation in
humans. It damages vegetation by destroying the leaves.
 PM10 and PM2.5 fine particulate matter- PM10 and PM2.5 are particles < 10 μm and < 2.5 μm in diameter,
respectively. Exposure to particles can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat; cause respiratory infections, etc. in
humans. PM exposure can lead to respiratory and heart diseases in both animals and humans. PM exposures
block and damage the stomata. It further impacts photosynthesis and respiration in plants.

3. Consider “Going Green”:

“Going Green” indicates practicing an environmentally friendly and ecologically accountable

lifestyle as well as creating conclusions to support protecting the environment and sustaining
natural resources. These campaigns entail deciding to live a sustainable, environmentally
friendly lifestyle. It assists in minimizing pollutants that enter the soil, waterways, and air.
Going green minimizes air pollution and environmental pollutants. Going green can affect

5
our body’s immunity to fight diseases and expose us to infections and severe
illnesses. Another advantage of going green is that it cuts the pollution levels that are released
into the air and thus into the environment. Going green can help your office/home/school
become a healthier place. This can have a significant influence on staff time and result in
fewer employees/staff/students taking sick leave.
It decreases the possibility of getting nervous or anxiety problems in humans. Going green,
being one of the ways to decrease air pollution; contributes to the protection of forests,
wildlife habitats, and the environment.
Further environmental benefits of going green include better air quality, better health, and
less wastage. Recycling and utilizing superior materials for construction and daily life
minimize landfill trash as plastic, for instance, is non-biodegradable.
4. Plant Trees:

Planting trees will support us get the adequate fresh air we require. Trees improve air quality in multiple ways:
they swallow carbon dioxide and create O2 via photosynthesis. They can actively gather pollutants on the
exterior walls of leaves and the root system of the plant.
Improving greenery is one of the most basic methods to decrease the effects of air pollution. Growing trees,
bushes, an organic farm, indoor plants, etc. help us in decreasing air pollution. They support the removal of
pollutants from the air. Plants help people focus better at home and work.
All living creatures need O2 for the respiration method. It also aids to keep the ozone layer. The
ozone layer shields Earth’s ecosystem from harmful UV radiation. That is why we must grow more trees and
plants. Growing trees is said to be one of the most essential steps among these 10 ways to decrease air pollution.

5. Avoid Plastic Bags:

Because they are very hard to decompose. Plastic bags are non-biodegradable. That means they cannot
efficiently degrade over time. Dumping plastic waste in water bodies leads to the endangerment of different
aquatic animals. These animals can include sea turtles, fish, etc. These aquatic animals eat plastic waste that can
lead to suffocation or, can enter their digestive system. Digesting plastic bags is not easy; they are toxic and can
lead to the deaths of marine life.
Animals such as cows can easily eat plastic bags while feeding. Multiple investigations have shown that cows
that swallow plastics eventually quit consuming their normal meal. Plastic damages their internal organs and
accumulates inside their bodies. They slowly can’t yield milk, and even if they can, it’s tainted with dangerous
compounds like carcinogens.
Proper disposal methods should be utilized for plastic bags. Carry your bags rather than ask for plastic bags at
shops. Create the habit of utilizing jute or paper bags.

6. Make use of Solar Energy:

Solar power can save a ton of energy for you and, on top of that, it could also end up saving you a lot of cash in
the long run as well. Solar energy, being a sustainable origin of energy, plays an essential role in cutting
emissions of greenhouse gases. Also, dealing with climate change is important to maintaining humans and
wildlife, and habitats. Solar energy can help improve air quality and minimize water usage linked with energy
production.
When we burn fossil fuels for the production of energy, there are three main air pollutants released into the air.
These pollutants are Sulfur Dioxide, CO2, and NO2. Sulfur Dioxide is liable for acid rain; carbon dioxide adds
to global warming and the greenhouse effect; while NO2 is accountable for acid rain and pollution both. Solar
panels and electric cars are two innovations that will help in decreasing air pollution. Solar energy is clean,
renewable energy; that is a substitute way to generate electricity without polluting the air and the
environment.

7. Always Use Recyclable Products:

6
Buy recyclable products if you have access to them and the capability to choose them. Reusing, Reducing, and
recycling help in cutting down solid waste generation. When we reuse a product, such as a water bottle, we will
decrease the air pollution caused by burning the waste in landfills. Other dangerous toxins that landfills emit are
decreased as well.
Fabrication with recyclable objects saves hydropower while also reducing air and water pollution.
Four primary reasons we should utilize recycling and recyclable products:
 Recycling saves energy: Producing goods from recyclable plastic decreases energy use, to producing goods
from fresh organic matter. Eg, paper created from recycled paper pulp consumes 40% less energy than paper
created from pure wood fibers.
 Low demand for raw materials: When we make use of recycled products, the need for raw materials
decreases. This decreases the misuse of raw materials and energy use as well.
 Preservation of natural resources: Recycling paper aids in saving forest areas and trees. Plastic recycling
helps in cutting down the production of new plastic, which will hence make less solid waste.
 Conservation of wildlife: When we recycle, we decrease the need for raw materials. As a result, less
damage is done to nature and wildlife. So it helps in the conservation of wildlife and the ecosystem as well.

8. Quit Smoking:

Smoking is absolutely dangerous to your health and the people near you. It leads to an increase in different
disorders and early deaths than air pollution. This is completely avoidable. Similarly, medical problems caused
by smoking occur at a younger age than regular illnesses caused by air pollution.
Tobacco agriculture requires a larger area, water, chemicals, and workers, all of which are precious assets that
could be utilized effectively. Closing tobacco manufacturing units are equal to removing more than 1 crore
vehicles from the roads yearly.
We can utilize smoking areas to reduce the impacts of air pollution. A smoking area restricts the range in which
a person can smoke legally. As a result, the smoke’s effects are limited to a small space, aiding in the decrease
of air pollution.

we successfully get all information about reducing air pollution This polluted air can be dangerous to
humans, animals, flora, fauna, and the whole ecosystem. Thus, we require to decrease air pollution and maintain
healthy living conditions. Humans are the primary reason behind the growing air pollution day by day. Other
natural reasons behind the increasing levels of air pollution include forest fires, or wildfires, shifts in the wind
patterns, the sun’s positioning, etc. Human activities influence air pollution concentrations to a great distance, so
it becomes our responsibility to decrease air pollution
