THEORY :
An electro pneumatic control system works with two forms of energy; electrical energy in
the signal control section and compressed air in the power section. Electrically actuated
directional control valves form the interface between the two parts of an electro pneumatic
control. They are switched by the output signals of the signal control section and open or
close connections in the power section. The most important tasks of electrically actuated
directional control valves include; switching supply air on or off and extension and
retraction of cylinder drives.

Solenoid operated DCV

The solenoid actuation is also known as electrical actuation. The schematic of solenoid
actuation is shown in Figure 1. The energized solenoid coil creates a magnetic force which
pulls the armature into the coil. This movement of armature controls the spool position. The
main advantage of solenoid actuation is its less switching time.

APPARATUS :
1. Fluid Sim Package
2. FESTO Didactic Trainer

SAFETY PRECAUTION :

1. Students should only work with the control systems under the supervision of a
lecturer.
2. Mount all the components securely onto the profile plate.
3. Use a tool to actuate the limit switches, for example a screwdriver.
4. Electrical connections must only be established and interrupted in the absence of
voltage.
5. Use low voltage only (max 24Vdc).
6. Do not exceed the maximum permissible pressure of 6 bar (600 kPa).
7. Do not switch on the compressed air until all the tubing connections have been
completed and secured.
8. Do not disconnect tubing while under pressure.
9. Pneumatic circuit set up:
Use 4 or 6 mm diameter tubing. Push the tubing into the push-in connector as far as
it will go.
10. Dismantling pneumatic circuits:
Press the blue release ring down, after which the tubing can be pulled out.

QUESTION/ DISCUSSION:

1. Explain the electrical operation when the pushbutton is pressed and released, and how it is
relate to the double acting cylinder reaction.
The circuit will function when one of the parallel-arranged pushbuttons S1 or S2 is pressed.
This is due to the parallel connection of the pushbutton contacts. By closing the circuit when
either pushbutton is pressed, the solenoid is activated. The plunger is subsequently drawn
in by the solenoid, extending the double acting cylinder's piston. The solenoid is de-
energized when the pushbutton is released, which closes the electrical circuit. The double
action cylinder's piston is retracted as the plunger then springs back out.
2. Explain the circuit operation when the pushbutton S1 and S2 are arranged in parallel.
The circuit will function when any of the parallel-arranged pushbuttons, S1 and S2, is
pressed. This is due to the parallel connection of the pushbutton contacts. By closing the
circuit when either pushbutton is pressed, the solenoid is activated. The plunger is
subsequently drawn in by the solenoid, extending the double acting cylinder's piston. The
solenoid is de-energized when the pushbutton is released, which closes the electrical
circuit. The double action cylinder's piston is retracted as the plunger then springs back out.
3. Explain the circuit operation when the pushbutton S1 and S2 are arranged in series.
Only when both pushbuttons S1 and S2 are depressed will the circuit turn on when the pushbuttons
are connected in series. This is due to the pushbutton contacts being wired in series. The circuit
closes when one pushbutton is pressed, but the circuit won't work until the other pushbutton is also
pressed. The circuit will activate and the solenoid will be powered when both pushbuttons are
depressed. The plunger will then be drawn in by the solenoid, extending the double acting
cylinder's piston. Release of the pushbuttons opens the electrical circuit.
