rafts, brief overview of subgrade models, modulus of subgrade reaction
for design of footings and rafts; bearing capacity - theories of Terzaghi,
Meyerhoff and Brinch Hansen

Module 2
Depth of foundation, bearing capacity footings and rafts, drained and 14 25
undrained analysis, layered soils, eccentric, inclined and lateral loads,
footings and rafts on intermediate geomaterials, footings on rocks;
Settlement of footings and rafts – settlements using elastic theories,
settlement of foundations on sand - Schmertmann’s and Hough’s
method, consolidation settlements of footings and rafts on clay; IS code
provisions.

Classification of piles based on method of installation, effects of 14 25
installation, shaft resistance of driven and bored piles in coarse grained
and fine-grained soils, shaft resistance of bored piles in residual soils
and intermediate geomaterials, end bearing resistance of bored and
driven piles in coarse grained and fine-grained soils, residual soils and
IGM’s, capacity of piles socketted into rock, negative skin friction;
lateral capacity of piles – free and fixed head, short and long piles,

loaded piles, uplift capacity of piles; IS code provisions.

dynamic tests; Compensated foundations – concepts, design principles,
uplift, down-drag; Piled rafts – use of piles to control settlements of raft
foundations, design principles; Well foundations – types, various
components and their design, stability analysis, sinking; Foundations
for towers – stability against uplift, overturning, sliding.
