Part I II III IV Total

Weight 10 10 10 20 50
Score
Part I: Say true for the correct statement or false for the incorrect statement. (2 pts. each)

1. Water softening is needed when hardness is less than 150-200 mg/l.

2. Plain chlorination is the process of addtion of chlorine when other types of treatment is
required.
3. Slow sand filter is preferable for non uniform quality of treated water
4. Rectangular sedimentation basins are likely to have a short -circuiting problems
5. The optimum pH scale for drinking water is between 7 and 7.5 .

Part II: fill the blank space with the correct word/words (2 pts. each)

1. __________is a problematic circumstance in which water ny passes the normal flow path
through the basin and reaches the outlet in less than the normal detention time.
2. __________is a rectangular basin that is essentially two sedimentation basins stacked one
a top the other.
3. __________ is the agglomeration of destabilized particles in to a large size.
4. __________ is carrying away the accumulated impurities and clean water is forced
upward when the filter is washed
5. __________is usually defined as water which contains a low concentration of calcium
and magnesium ions.

Part III: Match the items listed under A colomun to the items under B colomun (2.pts.
each)

A B
1. Aeration A. Colour , odour and taste removal
2. Jar Test B . Determine optimum pH and coagulant dose
3. Hindered Settling C. Secondary effulents

4. Conditioning

5. Discrete particle settling D. To aid sludge thickening in WT

E. Pre-sedimentation
F. A test to determine water flow
G. Dewatering

Part IV: Workout (show clearly all the necessary steps)

1.Design a slow sand filter to treat a flow of 600 m3/day.(7 pts)

- Assume any necessary datas reasonably.

2. A cross-flow, horizontal shaft, paddle wheel flocculation basin is to be designed for a flow of
20,000m3/d, a mean velocity gradient of 26.7/sec (at 10 C), and a detention time of 45 minutes.
The Gt value should be from 50,000 to 100,000.

Tapered flocculation is to be provided, and the three compartments of equal depth in series are to
be used. The G values determined from laboratory tests for the three compartments are G1 =
50/sec, G2 = 20/sec, and G3 = 10/sec. These give an average G value of 26.7/sec. The
compartments are to be separated by slotted, redwood baffle fences, and the floor of the basin is
level. The basin should be 15 m in width to adjoin the settling tank.

Determine:
1. The Gt value (3pts)
2. The basin dimensions (5 pts)
3. The power to be imparted to the water in each compartment(5 pts)
