BACKGROUND

The Covid-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and presumed to have originated

in Wuhan, China, significantly impacted global society and public health. Commencing in

early 2020, it led to widespread lockdowns and social distancing measures. This prompted

drastic changes in students' social media usage due to disrupted daily activities and school

closures. With increased isolation, social media became a vital tool for communication and

combatting loneliness.

Nathan M. Hager's research highlighted elevated depression rates, especially among college

students, attributing loneliness to the pandemic's social distancing guidelines. This, social

media platforms served as a means of alleviating loneliness, sharing experiences, and

fostering a sense of community. Subsequently, the researchers’ aim to investigate the impact

of the Covid-19 shutdown on the social media usage on students’.
